Thanks Steve! It is what I said it would be, just a quick snippet of the blending control. I hate the videos where it says amp demo, and it's just the guy wanking around showing their chops, which is fine, but it's like, come on guy, you didn't even touch the amp when that;s the title of your video!

I love that overdrive you get! My gain box is a bit milder than I'd like, even when the Vibro is turned up. That's a Satriani Overdrive box? Might haveta look into that.

Also, I checked out some of your other videos, says you've been playing for only a few months? You're VERY good Steve, got a real knack for playing. 3 months into my playing I was still trying to figure out the verse chords to Stairway to Heaven and Back in Black! Then, i didn't take lessons or anything, just coped songs I like.

Anywho... back to GE discussion!

Thanks! Yea, I've been playing a total of about 4 months and 1 week. BUT I am off all winter (own an Ice Cream shop, closed for Winter) so Im sitting here for a couple hours a day noodling around. Im using a Vox Satchurator and it seems like a great OD box. Sounds better on the 57 deluxe but also sounds pretty decent on the PRRI. Of course, sounds better in person as my Vidcam sucks at audio, then youtube on top of that.

Anyway, I started Guitar Jan 08, but quit in April 08. Started back up last month. Between Jan 08 and April 08 I tried so many guitars looking for one that just fit. Les Pauls, Musicman, Ibanez, Schecter..basically everything but Fender. I happened to try a Tele one day at GC and was hooked. Now with the GE I am soooooo happy. It's perfect for me. My wife asked why I couldn't get one of those $299 Teles (Squire CV) - All I need is a CV but I had a budget of $2500 for a guitar and amp and I wanted something that was gonna last a loooong time and stick with me. I splurged :) I also like Les Pauls but no more $!

It never ends...

Just messin' around! I've been through so many damn guitars in the last couple years trying to find that "one" that's perfect, but I think the lesson I learned is spend the extra buck to get what you really want, if that means gettin' something cheap to hold you over until you can afford that Les Paul Custom or what have you, then so be it. Nothing else will satisfy you until you get just what you want.

Having said that, I'm in a happy state right now with my Tele and Strat for Fenders, just gotta hold off 'til I can afford a good Gibson again.

Now I want to show you my favorite guitar and amp rig.

I ordered my Allen Accomplice kit with an Eminence Legend 15" speaker. This has given me ,what I feel, is one of the better combinations of guitar and amp due mostly to the 6V6 Deluxe Reverb clone, but with a beefy 15" inch speaker, and a Tele that has a bridge pickup output in the 10K range, that makes the most out of that kickiin' 6V6 amp.
I do note that other rigs give me great pleasure, as I don't get to play roots rock and country nearly as much as I get to play big band music with an 18" acoustic archtop and a choice of other amplifiers, but I sure like the above combo for roots rock, funk and soul music.

You should check out G.E.'s work with Moonalice. It's very much a band rather than a showcase for one musician, but he's still playing great. You can download some entire gigs here.

i've been loving my GE red since i got it. great neck. great pups, both neck and bridge.

wondering, though, how much bigger/smaller the neck is than a Nocaster. i know the actual dimensions are different (doesn't get as wide as you move up the neck), but is it as deep?

also, wondering what you guys are doing about the really noisy (totally unshielded) bridge pup. without that bridge-plate, it picks up mexican radio and channels from the far east! geeze! anyone considered putting a regular, or non-ferrous, bridge plate on there, while keeping the pup screwed into the body?

Not sure about the neck dimensions, and I am glad I don't have the bridge PUP problems you seemt o be having. it's a bit noisy but nothing worse than any other non-noiseless singlecoil I've played. maybe someone else has similar problems?

also, dual-tone, which serial number do you have? and is it on the headstock or the neckplate? let me know and ill add you to the list!

#1 on that, I saw them last summer and I hope they stop this spring on the tour. It's a band, but G.E. is up front a lot.

serial number on neck plate with GE Smith logo: SV000174.

i don't have another Tele to compare bridge pup noise levels with, but my GE bridge pup sure seems to be really noisy (ie no shielding). wouldn't this have something to do with the bridge pup being completely exposed? of course, i love the tone (have been told it's similar to a Nocaster bridge pup; not sure, though, if a Nocaster has a brass bass-plate or not).

Timely thread for me. I was in the store I shop(Martin Music in Memphis--a local guy with a killer inventory--no GC for me). I brought home the GE Smith they have in stock to A/B with my 68 Tele. This one is just under 8 lbs, honey blonde with great grain showing through the finish. It sounds terrific. I think this is one of the best Tele concepts ever. Hats off to GE and Fender for this one.

For me, I need a little thinner neck. I find that this one is tough on my small hands. And I like bigger frets. A 9.5 neck radius is a would be a good idea, but the 7.25 is not a dealbreaker.

In the end, this thing is great, but not exactly right for me. I want to get a second Tele, but when I do it will have to give me something I don't get from my 68. BUT--I thought ya'll should know the GE can stand proudly with an older guitar.

And Doster, it's not much, but here's an example of the bridge position tone control. goes from spanky tele to almost strat-like jangle by blending in with the neck. I keep it on the bridge spot 90% of the time because with the blend control all the way down, it's basically like full-on neck, but just a hint of sparkle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxsdXTvjfYk

Camera-phone video, so forgive the quality but the idea behind the sound's there!

Sounds good! Did you rewire your Smitty to simulate the old blend circuit? Mine came with the modern vol, tone and the PU selector to get the bridge, bridge and neck combo or neck only.

Mellecaster was the one who did the work, but yes, he retained the blend circuit exactly as it was before, and made it so the volume was closest to you, then the tone, then the selector switch is in the same place as before, dark tone towards the neck, neck PUP in the middle with no tone control, and bridge pickup to the rear with the blend tone control.

so essentially it's the same setup as stock, just flip-flopped

volume control ---> tone control ---> pickup selector (dark vol only<-- neck vol only<-- bridge vol with blend tone control)

so im guessing the GE's come with the modern wiring from the factory?

Just a note on the noisy bridge PUP...my GE bridge pup is QUIET as a mouse. No buzz, no hum, no noise. Just as quiet as when I has the Am Deluxe tele with noiseless pups. Not sure if its my house/electric or what but its quiet. I've played P90 guitars in the store that were horrible for buzzing and this was one fear of going to a normal Tele pickup for me, but I am happy with it as its dead quiet.

I would've wired mine with the Nocaster blend circuit too but I couldn't stand having that dull/half dead sounding front position when the rest sounded so good. No offense to anybody who keeps it, for my playing style I like to be able to have tonal control over the neck pickup by itself.

As far as noise/hum from the pickups, the GE is one of the quietest Teles I've played or owned.

Also, should be getting my GE body and neck back soon (with the Buckocaster blue sparkle treatment. Got a leather Waylon style pickguard for it too!

I've been tuning in over at Bucko's thread watching it being built. I think it's going to be one spectacular guitar and can't wait to see a bunch of pictures.

Mine is also very quiet. I don't play with a lot of gain usually, so that could be a factor.

I'll try. If the link works it'll be close to the right pages. If not, just pull up the Buckocaster thread and start around pg 67.

Sorry 2tone..

I did not get the serial number. It is a great guitar, but the neck was a little fat for me. I get a little carpal tunnel tinkle sometimes. It is worse with really fat necks. Still--nothing but good things to say about the GE Tele.

No hard feelings! To each his own, it is quite beefy, some of my friends who are used to the thin-neck later-model USA Standards, etc. can't even bend a whole note on it! Bah humbug!

Definitely a factor, if someone flicks any switch on the same level of the house as me while I'm playing, it can make a little extra buzzing noise through my amp, regardless of the guitar.

#SV000144 in Dakota Red checking in. I guess I needed something special to happen to make my first post after hanging around for a long time. For me the G.E. is something special. I have a strat that I like a lot, a 20 year old ES-335 that I want to love but my hands don't. A few months ago I got the G.E. and have only taken the others out of their cases once each since then. I don't have to tell you guys about the tele vibe and the neck just happens to fit me like no other. For the first time in 11 years I am not looking for "the one". I already have it.

I don't have to tell you guys about the tele vibe and the neck just happens to fit me like no other. For the first time in 11 years I am not looking for "the one". I already have it.
Hey hey, very cool tale!

Interesting. I have some passing carpal tunnel issues which worsen with thin necks. I get much more leverage without strain on a fat neck.
