What kind of Pickup are you using in Frenchy? Thanks for the 08 Namm Top Bound Esquire Clip with BG.

Hey Twang
PLease tell me about you Copper Esquire.
Is it something you put together? Did it start out as a MIM Esquire with the body refinished in copper? Is it a production model? What year? Is it a Custom Shop piece? What kind of pickup are you using in it? Really, REALLY nice?

What I did was used rubber ink stamps on it. I put the black stamps on the raw wood. I then shot over it with orange dye tinted clear lacquer. I didn't fill any of the grain or didn't do any real sanding. The total finish took me about 3 hours including drying time. I figured with the soft pine it was going to get beat up so I didn't want to spend much time on the finish. As it turns out, it is such an awesome guitar I am playing it all the time. In retrospect, I wish I would have spent some more time on it and put a more traditional finish on it. But, now I don't want to risk changing anything for fear of loosing the magic.

Thanks for the info on your PU Big Steve.
I wouldn't touch the finish on your Esquire Either - as you said it would loose the magic. It's surely a one of a kind.

I'm thinking of taking the Esquire concept one step further.
I made myself a partscaster Esquire, using some beech I had lying around, mated to an old neck. I wired it up so that the one pickup just went to the volume control without any switching or tone. Then I realised that I rarely use the volume control anyway. So my next thought is to rebuild this guitar, and make another body for it, either out of some more of the beech I have, or maybe even a pine body. Only this time it will be stripped back to the very bare bones, in that it will have only a bridge and a pickup on the front;- no controls, no pickguard, and the pickup wired straight to the jack socket. I just thought that a plain bare Tele body with nothing else on it apart from a bridge and pickup would look really good. them I suppose that if it doesnt, I could always rout out for controls, etc. Has anyone done one of these before, I can't be the first? I'll post pics when its finished. |

Big Steve, don't touch the finish on that guitar. It's got the mojo man. It's your's and it's your unique finish. I personally think it rocks! I love graphics on guitars, especially the ones done by it's owners. It just makes it so much more yours, you know?. Very cool steed. I mean steed, not steve. LOL

I certainly respect your opinion and I only offer this as a possible explanation as to why some people (including myself) like the stain on the vintage necks. I have an authentic 65 Mustang with completely original finish on the neck and body, the neck has quite a bit of finish checking on it and is clearly pretty old. I've put it next to a reissue Mustang that has the vintage tinted neck and it is spot on. Other than the fact that one has years of playing on it, you can't really tell that one is tinted to look old and the other is just old. They really matched it very well. So to reply to your statement, we like them because they look authentically old. That said, I'm not completely comfortable with Fender making many of their guitars look old, and I although I think many of the Relics look awesome, real relicing is the only way to go for me.

03 Fender Esquire Custom Celtic
these guitars didn't get much support...little too radical I guess but I gotta say
it is a blast to play. I picked one up last year for 300$ and always grab it first... sustain for miles, light as air and one control knob..Leo would love it for it's sheer simplicity....

Roadman, I always thought it would be cool to get one of those Celtic Esquires and install a GFS Mean 90 and a dual concentric pot so it could have a volume and tone control. Seeing one again makes me want to try it should the proper specimen come along. I think they made a GT version with racing stripes too if I recall correctly....

Bluesjuke,
I saw one of those cases a while ago and when I found out that my Custom Esquire was coming with a standard Tweed case -I immediately thought of those 2007 Custom Shop cases with the logo inside. I looked on Ebay and found a guy who was selling one. I thought about it for a day and then...well, I Had to have it

Mark N - that is one very nice Esquire. The black guard is perfect for it.
ESQUIREoholic - consider the fancy case as buying something nice for your lady...sweet! Club Esquire is a happenin' place...

CLUB ESQUIRE
Hi friend here is my hown "Esquire" Modding !
It was a very cheap Dimavery bought on ebay for 35€. It was new but with some finish defect. I just keep neck, body, tuners, bridge and control plate. I put new vintage Fender brass bridge barrel, 2 new Fender volume and tone pots + 0.47 caps, a GFS overwound bridge pickup, and do a light relicing job. Now is a FERDEN "Diablocaster". with Esquire spirit... Real Blues and Rock&Roll sounds, very terrific, i love my guitar |

Sounded like you were playing in some massive reverb tank! Nice tone though and some nice playing. Maybe I should hunt down a video camera and do some clips of my Esquires.

Mightve been the room too a bit, you were pretty far awy from the camera.
I looked but there is no digital video camera in the house, the best I can do is bad sound recordings damnit. |

hey bad sound recordings would be better than none right? would love to hear them! I was a bit back from the camera and the living room has a high ceiling so that could have contributed to the big reverb. I wasn't gonna post it cause I am a bit embarassed by the sloppy playin...but what the hell?
I think I am gonna throw some compensated brass saddles on it sometime soon and maybe swap out the pup...it's a great guitar on its own as it is but I would like to tweek it just a bit |

When I'm in California next, my Dad and I will make some blank control plates, with just the two fastener holes, and for the neck pickup rout as well. That's close enough for me.

You could engrave the plain control plates with something fancy?
Or add some weird buttons on there that aren't connected to anything, just to confuse people. I like the look of the open neck pickup route, I've taken my pickguard off my 54 re-issue to make it look more Billy Gibbonsy. I might record some sound clips of my Esquires tomorrow if I'm bored. |

Double post.. Here's a REALLY BAD recording of me playing my MIJ 54 re-issue Esquire just screwing around today.. I plan on hopefully completing to a decent standard soon enough, going on a bit of a recording kick to get down all the songs stuck in my head.
Hear it at: www.myspace.com/thedevoidone it's entitled 'VERY Rough Shuffle Blues Thing' If you need something to cleanse your ears afterwards, you can listen to my John Lee Hooker cover and tell me what you think? |
