Whenever I take pictures and want to post them here, I always need to edit them because the files are too big.

I usually send mine to photobucket for sizing then back to my computer.
Then post them here.
You can post them from photobucket, but they will disappear if there is a problem with photobucket or if you delete them from photobucket. There are probably hundreds of photo posts on the forum that no longer show the photo.

The point of the 'manage attachments' button once you hit 'go advanced' is hopefully not having to go to photobucket, or other software for resizing.

Shorten the process and set the camera to a smaller file size before taking/transferring photos, and they will be (for instance) 119 KB which fits the criteria-when I upload-without resizing, other software, or hosting websites.

I always size mine to about 8x10 and 72 dpi (using my Adobe PhotoDeluxe program), then put them on Photobucket and just post the .img link here. That way TDPRI doesn't have to host the pic.

8x10 (Inches) is great if your printing a photo to put on the fireplace mantel, but HUGE for a computer screen.

For use on a forum, 1000 px by 1000 px (or less) are more that big enough. Heck the post display area is generally displayed less than 800 px wide.

To answer the OP the general size we recommend is 1000 px by 1000 px or less and less than 100,000 bytes per photo.

One of the unfortunates of 'hosting sites' is...if they're ever moved to a different album on photobucket, deleted in the album, or the hosting account is closed-we get those goofy 'no image' boxes in the archives.

Some of us-like to visit old threads for comments and photos during our research.

Then host them somewhere that won't delete your pics! There are plenty of hosts other than photobucket.

8x10 at 72dpi is only 576x720. Just sayin'...

As to hosting - most internet providers have "personal online storage" available as part of your subscription. Comcast provides a gigabyte per email address, and you can have up to 7 addresses on a single account. Qwest provides 2 gigs for free, and you can buy more. Put your pics on your own account and they'll never disappear unless you do.

Oops, I should have checked that before I posted. that size at 72 dpi is just peachy.

I do all my photo work in pixels, and never really equate sizes like that into inches.

So what is the pixel per inch size we should use? Or when Texas Twang says resolution down to 150, what does he mean?
My photo program, Gimp, wants to size in terms of pixels per various units.

Make your photos 1000 px by 1000 px or smaller and save them as medium or 50% Jpegs. Just insure that the edited photo is less than 100,000 bytes in file size.
