"Reply to Post" and Google ads...

Previously, when I got a "reply to Post" e-mail about a thread to which I'd contributed, the link took me to the post to which it referred - usually but not always the most recent in the thread.

However, suddenly instead it's been taking me to the first post in the thread, in which a bunch of Google ads have inserted themselves, and I have to navigate to the end of the thread myself.

In fact, I've noticed that whenever I open a thread I'm getting four or so Google ads in the first post, obviously not put there by the member.

What's happening, is it to do with the software upgrade and how can I get back to normal?

I also noticed this and certain words were highlighted with a Google search type arrow against it when you clicked on the word.I got away from it by restoring my pc to an earlier day,the day previous, and it seems, for the moment to have cured it!!I think it is some windows application though not sureI am also getting popups from various sources now so will have to increase my popup settings.

UPDATE:

The ads you are talking about are the ads that non-members (those not logged in) see when they visit the TDPRI. You normally don't see those because you are normally Logged in. HOWEVER, the recent software update logged everyone out (by necessity) so even if you have "Remember Me" checked you will have to log in upon your first visit back to the TDPRI.

This is why when you clicked a link in an email to "Reply to Post" from a post notice you where brought back to the page and unbeknownst to you you were NOT logged in.

Hope this helps:

I experienced something similar (screenshot below), however I found that it went away after I realized that I wasnt' really logged in anymore (I'm set to "Remember Me"). I didn't have to do anything but log in and all better.

OK, this makes more sense.

Because of the software update you would have to log in again. Even though you have Remember Me checked.

Also, those "strange Google Ads" and the green double underlines are what non-members see every day. We have 50,000 visitors a day and these ads are targeted to them.

From the OPs initial post I thought he was getting pages of Pop Up ads.

My mistake. These are not caused by the update, but since you haven't logged in since the update that's why you see those things when clicking on an email link.

Thanks for giving me the info I needed to make this connection.

As I hope you've seen it's not your computer or spyware, it's that you were not logged in.

What you saw is what visitors that are not logged in see. Once you log in, you do not see those ads and links.

Thanks, guys. Actually I was beginning to suss out the situation at this end, because my installation of Firefox 3.5.6 on my old Mac has a habit of occasionally forgetting all my log-ins and passwords. This is simply cured by rebooting the browser, whereupon everything comes back (until the next time).

Once I'd logged in again, with "Remember Me" checked, all now seems as it should be.
