Do I have to use a photo host site?

Do I have to use a photo host site or can I upload photos from my computer directly to a post? I am able to upload using manage attachments, but when I try to insert using the 'mountain' tool it asks for a url. The instructions on this seem to indicate I can upload from my computer.

You have multiple choices.

You can upload them as attachments directly into your posts.

You can upload them to the Gallery here and embed them in your posts.

It's well documented in this forum as a sticky.

Ok I figured out what I was doing wrong. I was using the insert function instead of the attach function. What is the difference?

"Insert" is for when you have a URL for an online image.

"Attach" saves a picture that you have on your computer to this site as part of your message.

The benefit of the remote hosted image is that you don't have a size restriction. Additionally, it saves server space and bandwidth for the board host.

If you have a gmail account, you can just email it to yourself as an attachment, then link to the photo in your email to post here.

Huh? Perhaps that would work if the photo in the email was given a standard HTML URL -- I don't use Gmail so I am not aware if this is how they handle attachments. But other than that I can't see how you would benefit from sending yourself an email with a photo attached.

I believe that's actually how they do it. They don't have a traditional email client; the web-based application just saves attachments with a URL link.
