Matching headstock ON TOP of existing finish?

Just putting the feelers out on an idea for a project I'm currently contemplating.....

I'm yet to buy a neck for it, and the one I end up buying may be finished in nitro, finished in poly or unfinished depending on what I can get my hands on for the right price.

I'd like a painted headstock to match the colour of my guitar. If I go for an already finished neck, is it advisable to shoot coloured (sonic blue) nitro ON TOP of a nitro or poly finish, or would I need to strip the headstock first?

Thanks :)

Wouldn't hurt as long as you prepped the surface. Guys around here use poly as their base
