I was sitting around today and got a kind of crazy cool idea: what if you covered a tele with newsprint in a Paisley fashion? That would look pretty cool, but would there be a way to do it considering the thinness and weakness of typical newspaper? I've never done a regular Paisley finish before, so I was just wondering if this could work using the same application process.

I have no idea how you'd do it, but it does sound like a cool idea (as long as you got a good front page for the front).

I found this one with pastel paisley and a newsprint pickguard.

My sister uses rubbing alcohol on a painted nail to transfer newspaper print onto her nail. She just dips the nail in the alcohol and presses a news clipping on it. Maybe you could do it to a white-finished guitar? Just an idea.

I would think you could glue the paper down on the body, lightly mist some clear over top to fix the ink, and then spray normally. Just need to experiment with a few glues like spray glue or modge podge(sp.), and available clears.

I have seen a few threads like this in the past, but I can't recall anyone following through.

I intend to break that trend.

Cool. I started one of those threads a while back (search for "newspaper finish") but haven't had time to do it yet. There was a fairly big risk involved because I was planning on using old paper that was somewhat expensive. I think I'm just going to scan them and waterslide it now. I'm looking forward to seeing how you do it.

I haven't done it but thought about doing a drum set in Sunday Comic Strips...pretty much same idea. Just glue on, spray over. Not sure how it would work out though. Let us know if you do this?

Just waiting for a couple of debts to come in to cover it... I'm thinking stripped back esquire with empty tele routs, no pickguard, and a white finish.

Do you think I should border the sides in paper, or spray them black or white a la Paisley?

I used decupage (spelling?) method to put a picture from Playboy on a custom
motorcycle tank back in my chopper painting days. Buried it in acrylic laquer.
It turned out very well. Don't think it would do newspaper near as well as a picture.

A friend had a custom tele with a marbled wrapping paper on the top. Absolutely beautiful. Done as a decoupage finish then clear coated as I remember.

I am sure I saw someone here cover a body with newspaper. Try doing some searching.

as a newspaper man, who has undertaken a gift wrapping paper finish in the past, I would suggest the following:

get your clippings. primer the back of them in white, lightly so the other side ink won't show through. Krylon acrylic clear them lightly with four or five coats, both sides to keep get them somewhat waterproof. apply with weldbond thinned 1/2 down with water, use a roller to flat them. mist coat with nitro, or other, five or six coats. regular clearing process.

My gift wrap guitar, burst was added after a few wetter coats of clear, then continue clearing.

Sweet guitar! It is so tastefully designed, from the unique body and pickguard shape to the knobs which go so well withthe wrapping paper and paint scheme. Nice work.

(Btw, where did you get those knobs? :) )
