Simple Deft Question

So I hear you can apply deft (clear coat) right over nitro (I was using reranch clear). I need to buy some aerosol cans to finish up my fiesta red tele, but $25 for one can of Reranch clear is just too much.

Can someone post a link of a deft clear coat aerosol that would work over nitro, or suggest an alternative?

There should be no problem mixing brands of nitro. They will melt into each other. But I don't care for Deft- it's too soft. I like Watco lacquer (available at Woodcraft). Minwax lacquer also has a good reputation and is similar to Watco. Those go for about $8 a can.

Use 2 cans of clear over your color coat.

Deft is nitro. I'd spend the $25 though.

I use to use DEFT a lot. I kept having too many problems, so I quite using and recommending it all together.

1. Takes a very long time to dry
2. Soft
3. Prone to imprintation
4. Very Chemically reactive

Okay, thanks for the warning.
I am still searching for alternatives to Reranch clear because I have already spent about $40 more than I'd like to from their store (this thread spawned out of response to a bad case of blushing in high humidity).

Colt, would you recommend watco or miniwax like Sixshooter?

I know Colt and others don't like Deft, but I used it for
a few guitars and had no problems with it. The first
time I used it was over ReRanch vintage cream.

By the way, I used Deft gloss spray in a can, not Deft brushing
lacquer through a spray gun. Some of the complaints
about Deft I've seen have been from people using it
through a gun.

ps you can see the result here

Would this watco gloss lacquer work (as well as reranch nitro clear for a body)?
I found these locally for less than $5 a can.

Yup, it will work just as well. $5 is a great price. BTW, ReRanch spray nozzles are great. I save them and use them when I use other brands of paint/clear.

I do use lots of ReRanch products, BTW. Their paint color are great of course, and their primer is second to none and totally worth the cost.

The blue Deft cans are nitro, not sure about the other ones.

I have used both aerosol and quart cans, same issues.

I have used m inwax aerosol lacquer a few times, but never on a guitar.

Thank you so much. You just saved me a ton of dough.
Reranch is great, I love the fiesta red color aerosols (looks a heck of a lot more vintage correct than fiesta red squiers), but they are so expensive to finish a single body. I will use the reranch nozzles like you suggested.

On future projects, I will look into sprayers like colt, cause it is a lot cheaper than I thought.

I used Minwax Laquer, waited about a month to polish. Seems to dry better now it is warmer.

If you've bought from ReRanch, then why are you even thinking of using Deft?

FYI- ReRanch is made by Mohawk/Behlen, which is EXCELLENT nitro that cures fairly quickly and VERY hard. If you don't want to purchase from ReRanch (and there's no reason not to), then scope out Mohawk or Behlen and use that. Consumer-grade products contain a lot of retarder and plasticizers to assist flowout, so that a smooth finish can be achieved by a novice, but the price you pay is curing issues and ultimately, a soft finish. Just use the good stuff.

Yeah, it does work. And you can get it about anywhere. But compared to the mix RR uses I think most agree it doesn't compare. What does matter is what cost matters to you. I only use certain strings and picks and slides and pay a but more. I could care less what strap or cable I use and some folks spend $100 on those. It's a personal thing. I do have 3 or 4 cans around so I can't say I'll never use it again. I'm too cheap to throw it away.

Unless Bill has had to change suppliers, he uses McFadden (now called Seagrave).

Yes, that's what I was told as well but somebody here has mentioned its Mohawk/Behlen enough that it gets posted every time.
