Which Duplicolor Primer?

Hello to all,

My name is Ron, and I've been a long time lurker. I'm not building a Tele, but would like to know which Duplicolor Sandable White Primer do you use?

Do you use Duplicolor DAP 1689 12 oz.? According to Duplicolor It is enamel base primer. I want to use Duplicolor Truck, Van and SUV paint which is acrylic Lacquer for the color coats.

Also, has anyone ever used DS89 (5 oz. aerosol can ) acrylic base laquer primer, It's what Duplicolor recommends for the SUV Paint, but I was told that I would have to special order It.

This a Great forum. Thanks for you time.

Ron

Hi Ron and welcome. From my automotive bodyshop background I believe you can put enamel over lacquer but can't put lacquer over enamel. PLEASE if I am wrong about this chime in here.

I have used the DS039 (grey universal primer) and the SUV colors with great results. For a little quicker build up I've used the DS31 filler primer too.

I usually get mine from Auto Zone BTW

That's the general rule of thumb.....lacquer is much hotter and will make one sticky mess if shot over enamel. However I believe acrylic lacquer can be used but the enamel must be fully cured....as in weeks and weeks and weeks.

Thanks sbpirate for the warm welcome and info.

beyondhappy, I saw the grey primer at Pep Boys yesterday. I 'm having a hard time finding the DS89 white primer. I may just purchase the grey.

Hi Tcarp that for chiming in. I've heard a lot of good and bad things about enamel, so I decided to avoid it altogether.

Thanks to all,
Ron
