Protective coating for unfinished body?

Hi guys,

I'm gonna remove the paint from my Tele cause its paintjob's really thick and not letting any of the body's sound come out.

Just wondering when I remove its paint, what coating should I apply to protect the wood?

Shellac?

What are the differences between polyurethane and urethane?
And should I stain the wood to bring out its grain as well?

Thanks!

I've always liked just an oil coating. I believe you can tint (stain) the wood beforehand.

Shellac makes a nice base, do not spray heavy though.

Thanks for all the help so far..

What if I just apply lemon oil to the whole body? Is that good enough or would that be redundant?

I guess it depends on what's under the paint. if it's a 5 piece body, you might not want to see the grain. If the grains nice and you dye it something like brown, not stain, dye, then sand it back to the grain again, the dye should make it pop. then maybe hit it with nitro clear coat or even a tinted clear coat. Just a thought.

Hmmm good idea... I'm not sure what body it is though.. It's a TL-40 Japan Tele made around 1993-1994... Think it's a basswood body.
