Cherry Burst Advice..

I love this guitar body/paint job.

I have a black MIM tele that I can refinish (am going to use the neck and electronics either way) or I can make a telecaster body (never made one before, but I figure I can do so.) I assume since this is a translucent finish, starting with fresh wood will look better.

I'll need to cut a step in the body for the top binding. I have read enough posts here that I believe I can do that as well.

Those who have painted bursts before, what should I be aware of?
What is the best way to match these colors?
Is the body color painted or dyed?
I assume after the body is painted it is clear coated and polished.

Thanks. DG

On my greenburst tele the iddle color was wiped on like a stain, then we bursted the outside edge, then more coats of clear and wet sanding that I remember!! but it did turn out great. Stew mac sells the paint and dyes for the colors you need

Here is one that I did.

I clear coated the body first with sanding sealer. Then I shot the whole body with amber tinted lacquer and did the edges with cherry red tinted lacquer. You might want to go with a thinned down cherry red and then shoot a heavier red at the edges to get that color of that guitar.

I shot the edges straight on and shot the top and back form the middle of the guitar shooting toward the edge.

I built the burst up slowly with thin coats spraying until I had the color I wanted. The burst looked ok after shooting it and it got better after laying some clear coat over it. When I wet sanded and buffed it the color really took off.

Thanks guys. I ordered some paint from StewMac. I have a bare tele body coming from a cheap purchase on Ebay. We will see how it all comes out.
