Grain filling Ash with wet sanding with oil? I need info.
I read on this forum somewhere that instead of using grain filler i can wet sand oil and the dust will mix with the oil and fill the grain. I did search and cannot find that post.
Will someone fill me in on this method? will it work with ash? what is the proper way to do this? I need all the info i can get. Thank you. |

You can do that with Tru-Oil. Try posting that question over on ReRanch. Several members there have used that technique in the past.

It's pretty simple but requires some patience. I start with a 400 gr. wet or dry paper, and just enough oil to keep a nice skim coat on the wood. I sand with the grain, a section at a time making sure to overlap the sections. You will see the oil start to get gummy and wood colored. Add a few drops and keep going. When it looks like most of the pores are filled, stop and let the oil set up for about 10-15 minutes. I then use a credit card as a scraper and scrape off the excess going diagonal to the grain. Let the oil dry, (overnight for me) sand lightly with a block and some 600 gr., and repeat the process as many times as necessary to fill all the pores. If you tilt the body around in a light, you can see what still needs filled. After the filling is all dried, then you can start building coats to get the desired sheen.
