Budget SRV(Lots-o-pics)

I've always wanted one, so I took the plunge and made one for myself. Started off as a lowly $40 Squier affinity pawn shop score. I stripped the poly to find a nice 3 piece body and a nice flamed neck. Well I save the neck for another project, and to the SRV tribute plunge.

Thanks guys! It was a quick project. Still working on getting the goods together to make a replica of Tommy Shannon's bass.

I did but looking at pics of Stevie's guitar I decided it was to dark, so I lightened it up to it's current color.

I masked off the unpainted parts of the body before spraying the burst.

$45 affinity strat
$60 used Fender lefthanded gold trem
$37 gold hardware and tuners from guitar fetish
$12 Black pickguard from guitar fetish
$14 for stickers

Total of $168! Better than I thought.

The paints were leftovers from previous projects.

Did you use a template for the relic part?
I'm considering buying one from SRV guitar as I have a sunburst on the way.

Very cool! Looks just like the real thing did. One of the few relic jobs I like. So you sprayed the sunburst after completely stripping the body? What did you use to strip paint?

I have been using a heat gun to get paint off of my affinity body and it is getting no where fast.

I used a heat gun also. Take your time. The hardest part is the sides and inside the cutouts.

Started here.

I can't get over how great it is, you have made a work of art. How long have you been doing this? I've yet to attempt a body finish but my affinity should be the first.

What did you use to stain the "bare" wood?

Thanks, I used minwax walnut stain on the body, and tea and vinegar on the neck.

Final touch. I need to clean it up a bit, but you get the idea.

I think I found my Lenny platform as well. We'll have to see what's hiding under the poly.

You've done a really good job, looks amazing. It's an iconic guitar and it looks right, even with a headstock end truss rod access and 22 frets. I'm on the look out for a squier of similar spec, I used to have one years ago. Would love to do an SRV project. Any details on your relicing technique or is it top secret?

Thanks, and no I don't have any secrets. I used minwax walnut stain for the color. Of course I taped off the wear pattern before spraying the finish. Then I used a small screw driver and exacto to try and make the edges not look so planned. I had some pics of the original, and pics of some replicas handy for reference, and just tried to recreate the look. For the neck I used venegar and tea to get the grayish looking wood. It really works well in not only getting the color, but makes the wood look old. That's the basics. If you have any questions on a particular part of it, shoot me a pm, and I'll be glad to share what I learned.

Thanks, Lenny is in a holding pattern. I'm working on a few basses right now, and work is killing me with overtime so nothing is moving very fast.
