Duplicolor type?

I have a MIM Nashville Powertele that I am going to refinish. I have read through most of the forum here looking for answers, and gotten great feedback from several of you when I have asked questions. Thanks to you all.
I have decided to sand the poly (very thick) paint on there now just enough to even out the surface (the previouos ownber "relic'd" it by belt sanding and digging into it with something). there are a few 1/8" gouges which I will fill with bondo before priming.
My question is this: can I get the tactile feel (almost satin) of a new highway one using Duplicolor from an autoparts store? Specifically, what should I look for with Duplicolor (specific type of paint?)
I do not plan on trying to remove all the poy paint on there now, just enought to make a good surface prior to filling deep scrapes, priming, and painting.
Also, what is the best way to remove the string ferrules and still be able to use them again, or are they a "once only" use?
