Honey burst finish, how is it done?

I'm slowly getting started on my first scratch build and I am contemplating a honey burst. Any tutorials out there? So far my searches haven't turned up anything. Thanks.

Reranch guitars sells a "2 color burst spray". This is nomally used with a black edge & the center done in a color called burst amber. I did a Sienna Sunburst using the 2 color, amber, & red mohagany. I think if you just used the 2 color & amber center you'd get what you're looking for. When you spray the 2 color the more coats you put on the darker it gets. It will get almost black but not quite. So I'd say put your burst amber on & spray over that color lightly in the center darkening with heavier coats toward the edge to get what you're looking for. Try a couple test runs on scrap wood 1st, but I think you'll be able to get it. Don't use the 3 color burst, it has too much red dye in it.

2 color burst is the easiest way to get a honey burst. Spray the burst edge lightly. As stated above if you spray it heavy it can get almost black.

Thanks guys. That makes sense. This is still a ways off for me, but I'll be sure to post results when I have them.

Don't see a lot of Honey Burst Tele's out there.

Here's my Double Bound Honey Burst. Good luck. Don't forget to post shots after you're done.

BTW: I didn't shoot it... I sent it down to Guitar Mills to be shot.

You can free hand it with an rattle can or air brush with a bit of practice. Another way is to make an outline of your guitar on cardboard and cut it out smaller depending on how much overlap you want on the burst, use some push pins to raise it up off the base color and spray away.

Thanks for the links, some good info there.

PCR985, that's nice lookin' for sure. Mine is going to be a single-bound ash or alder body with a birdseye maple veneer. I'll hopefully be getting the wood for the body in a week or so.

Here's some ideas:

http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/burst.htm

I've been toning a lot of trans finishes; going heavy on the edges to cover up the end seams. You end up with some burst effect. This tutorial seems to best address the control of the bursting. But I have only played with it, then shot something else over the burst. Takes practice, it would appear.
