| Finely Finished Discussion of painting, finishing and yes, even relicing your guitar. Remember relicing is a finish option not an affront to your emotions. |

no spray finish on two-tone pine body?
Any suggestions for finishing a two-piece pine body where the two pieces are very different, grain- and color-wise? I'd really prefer not to spray paint it. I've been experimenting with dark blue and black stains, but they don't seem to cover the differences enough.

If you don't want a solid finish, how about a veneer front and back? Then you can stain or clear finish the front and back, maybe burst the edge and a little way over the top and back just to hide the joins? Just an idea...

Thanks! I'm not against the idea of a solid finish, I'm just not sure how or if I can make one work that doesn't involve spraying. I'm putting together a guitar with my daughter, and she's not too keen on a rough, rustic look but might go for it. So maybe some milk paint would do the trick. I'm mainly hoping for some creative (or obvious) possibilities I haven't thought of. I guess one possibility is to love the wood as it is instead of trying to change it and just rub in an oil finish or use some other clear coat.

P.S. I had to spray it off-white and it looks really nice and semi transluscent, with a perloid pickguard.Looks really nice now but ultimately it's yor choice.Cheers from Australia.

I'm afraid this is one where there's no middle ground.
You could try masking off the darker portion of the body and applying a toner mist; in other words a tinted clear finish - and see if you get lucky. I guess if you got quite close you could do a semi-trans finish and complete the obscuring of the mismatch. Otherwise, either veneers front and back, or a solid color, or go totally "freak flag" and finish it totally natural so there's no ifs or ands about the strong mismatch. ++ The one thing that I'm certain would bomb would be a semi-trans finish over the whole of it - and observer would look at the result and assume he was being underestimated. I do everything I know not to create that sensation. |
