solid Color Finish Questions?

Ok..I am starting my second build. This one will be an alder body with stewmac solid color laquer finish. I have a few questions:
1) Do I have to use grain filler on the alder for solid color finish
2) Do I need to spray a primer on before color or can I just use sand & sealer or clear laquer coates and then spray color coats without primer?
3) If I do need a primer which product or brand do you guys use?
4) Should I have blush remover, laquer retarder on hand?

thanks
Keith

probably not
2) Do I need to spray a primer on before color or can I just use sand & sealer or clear laquer coates and then spray color coats without primer?
that will probably depend upon what color you are using. One of the things a primer does is to produce a uniform base upon which the color can build
3) If I do need a primer which product or brand do you guys use?
I have had good luck with the Zinser products
4) Should I have blush remover, laquer retarder on hand?
Only if you think blush is going to be an issue.

thanks
Keith

The color is going to be a Solid Dark or midnight blue. I am in Long Island NY.. I will be spraying outside...Humidity is starting to come down...So i am hoping blush won't be a problem. I have a good spray gun and compressor and my skills are pretty good so I hope to get nice even, flat coates.

Usually not, but some pieces of alder are more porous than usual.

2) Do I need to spray a primer on before color or can I just use sand & sealer or clear laquer coates and then spray color coats without primer?

You can skip primer, but I can't think of a good reason to.

3) If I do need a primer which product or brand do you guys use?

I prefer reranch primer. I've used other brands, but IMHO reranch is the best.

4) Should I have blush remover, laquer retarder on hand?

Never hurts to have it available. It sucks having to go back and order it, then waiting for it to arrive.

thanks
Keith
Good luck

Ok...I actually looked around some boxes in my shop and found 2 cans of reranch white primer. I was ordering sandpaper so I added blush remover to the order. The Alder has a few areas of grain that I suspect might be a little open so I am going to use oil base grain filler.

thanks

ALWAYS! Sooner or later it will save a finish from having to be sanded down.

What's the expression? "Better to have it & not need it than to need it & not have it"
