Custom decals - sources?
Ok,
This has been covered before. Kinda. A recent query got the response to use the search function because this has been covered before. So, why am I asking again? Cuz I did a search and went back 7 or 8 pages and found a link to a guy's email address, a suggestion to try ebay (I did - there's a few). But I didn't really find any threads with pictures of decals/ reviews that the poster had ordered, and contact info or links. (Other than the email address and the vague suggestion to try ebay. Could be i used a poor search term and highly likely that the info is out there on this forum. It's just not all together in one place that I could find). I did see lots of nice decals that folks here had made themselves. I got some ideas about what direction I'd like to go, but not really who to order from. (I'm not going to make my own - no printer, not interested in tracking down the paper if I did, or downloading the fonts I want etc.) So, anybody out there actually order a decal and get it made? Are you satisfied with it? Thanks, Geoff |

I had these made by GEOCHA from the ReRanch board (not sure if he hangs here also).
If you search for him over there you will find lots of info. When I got mine, turnaround time was just a couple of days. ![]()

I've used a seller on Ebay named "brauskoh" several times. I sent him an idea of what I wanted and he came through with a winner every time. A couple examples of his work:

If you don't want metallic colors or white, waterslide decals are the way to go, because you create them however you want. Plus they are cheap as hell, and easy to make.

I just went to my local sign co. that does vinyl and ordered some decals, they are black outline filled in with gold. It seemed to be a thin enough mil that it would sit right under some lacquer...or I just spent $23 to learn a lesson!

I've had great decals from Mike at this email address, jake_me@hotmail.com
I've used several of his replica types for repairs and custom work where the original decals were damaged or couldn't be saved. Otherwise I make my own with laser decal paper on a laser printer, I don't use metalic inks in my own logos so laser is OK and I don't get any adverse reactions with various finishes over the top of them. |

anyone ever used (i did) the decal site you are asked to not name on the forums?
They have excellent, if somewhat larger decals from a well known brand and do (if you ask nice) customwork too... |

John, Where do you find waterslide decal paper, locally or online? PS: I really like your "Built by hand in a garage" on your decal. I have printed on clear transparency plastic sheets in the past. It's a little thicker than paper, but you can drop it right on as you're clear coating the headstock, and then clearcoat over the top. The decals are probably easier as you have time to move them around and get them right where you want them.

I got it on ebay from THIS SELLER.
I used to use some thicker stuff too but it took way too many clear coats to cover up the edge. With the thin waterslide paper it only takes 5 or 6 coats of clear. The only problem with it is keeping it flat while you are working it into place. Its like trying to use cling wrap in the wind.

I'll order some and give it a try. Every description I've read by different sellers has a different disclaimer about clear coats on the decal or cracking if you do clear coat. My concern was the clear coat reacting with lacquer. Guess I'll do the old trial and error method. Thanks John

Hi
A well stocked hobby shop (models or trains) should have blank waterslide decal paper. It usually is available in clear or white, laser or inkjet. If you use an inkjet printer, you need to spray a clearcoat BEFORE you wet the decal. If you go the laser printer route, no problem with water, but you might want to very lightly spray some clear coats after application as some finishes can melt the toner image. In any event, the decal is best applied to a glossy surface, lest you get silvering of the clear portions of the decal (this is due to air entrapment).

What shadowfan said. I make my own decals all the time. Wet slide decal paper is available at a lot of places. Make your design, Print the design on decal paper, spray with clear coat a few times. Let the clear coat dry and you've got your decal. Much cheaper doing your own.
