Timing

Okay,

I will be soon ready to move on the toning my body.
What is a good time frame for spraying a nitro barrier coat onto sealed shellac, and from time of barrier coat to lacquer toning?
Is there a sweet spot or window of opportunity?

I will have pics coming soon.

Bill

I've done many finishes in shellac and they all came out great IMHO. Shellac is beautiful stuff that is easy to apply and "popped" the grain of my pine bodies:

Cheers,

Sascha

Thats a mighty fine looking tele body.

How many layers of shellac did you do?
Is it all shellac or is there a lacquer top coat, how is it holding up, when was the body finished?

Hey Bill,
I cannot say exactly how many layers I put on since I was finishing this guitar on the side whilst I was doing another project and the pine was drinking up the first few coats. But it's fair to say that the shellac was applied very very thin and the last few "wipes" were done with mostly alcohol and only a tiny bit of shellac.
There is no lacquer topcoat and frankly I don't really get the idea of putting lacquer over shellac because IMHO this would take all the pros away that shellac has to offer (easy to repair).
I also cannot say how well the finish holds up (body was sold shortly after being finished) but lots of old mandolins that were finished with shellac back in the days still look great today.
Again IMHO shellac is one if not the most beautiful finish for a guitar there is and the good thing is that everyone can do it without $$$ spray gear but just a little bit of practice...

Sascha, that pine body is beautiful. Can you say a little more about how you
applied it? I gather that you padded it, but didn't use french polishing?

Did you simply pad on the shellac, using less shellac for the last wipes?
For the last wipes did you apply more pressure, or use circular or other
wiping patterns, in an attempt to get a good smooth gloss finish?

Target date tomorrow

Well, I am hoping on tomorrow for toning the body.
The body is hanging up and am wondering what is the best way to clean the body to get rid of any residue from wet sanding and oils.

For light polishing, microfiber cloths dampened with a few drops of water work fine for me.

Waiting for gooder weather

Well I am still waiting for drier weather, its been rainy and humid for 2 weeks now and when it was nice I was gone on extended weekend holidays, my body is ready to go with the lacquer toner so I guess it will get even more time to cure.
