new member, have a few finishing questions

hey guys, got a question for ya. i am doing a telecaster project, and i am going to be staining the guitar ebony. now the question is, what do i need to do other than sanding the body down to get the best possible finish? the body is alder. is there anything else other than sanding that i would need to do? i am using minwax ebony stain. also, after staining, what kind of clear should i put on it? just regular poly? or should i acutally put a clear laquer on it? any feedback would be greatly appreciated

With alder you may want to sand seel it. I am not an expert but most people i have asked said to do that. Stain it multiple times and sand it lightly and put any kind of lacquer on it u want. Im not familiar with the finishing aspect of building but i hope i was sumwat helpful.
