If your friend speaks German, this might be a forum to look at: http://www.gearbuilder.de/forum/ - plenty of links to German suppliers to be found.

I personally had good experiences with this Spanish tonewood supplier (reasonable prices & shipping): http://www.madinter.com

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I hadn't thought of furniture repair places or supplies. I'll look in to that. I contacted the company that makes Tru Oil and they gave me the names of two distributors here in Japan, but one doesn't carry it and the other never answered my email. So I guess I'll move on to the next options. Appreciate the help.

Bill,
you should also check out finishes for hardwood floors; I've two necks that I finished with a German product (a wax-oil mixture) intended for hardwood floors, and it was easy to apply (by rubbing it in), feels nice, and holds up very well - think about it, floors have to "endure" much more than guitar necks, so finishes for hardwood floors should easily withstand a guitar player's hands...
If you really want TruOil, you could also look at stores that carry ErnieBall/MusicMan guitars and parts - MusicMan offers a TruOil kit (oil and wax) for their necks (it costs quite a bit more than if bought from a gun store, though...)

@ spannerman & jkingma
Got the food coloring idea from this post:
http://www.tdpri.com/forum/telecaster-discussion-forum/79481-yet-another-first-build.html
I contacted the guy who did this and he said the color is good so far after two years+. From my perspective, the fading will only make it better.

@ hackworth, thanks, but the issue was with the holes drilled in the used neck I bought. The low E and A holes were too close together. (You can see in the back of neck pic if you look for it.) I was aware that the Low and High E tuners for the vintage tuners are unique.

@ mgdesigns, thanks, but it must be the picture. I will check it out. Hadn't noticed that. Plays nice, but will fix this anyway. Kind of a newbie mistake that locking tuners and winders make easy to happen.

@bubba. exactly the kind info I was looking for. Appreciate it.

This is a great forum, happy to be part of it. Hope you all have a great weekend.

---Quote (Originally by Zmatko)---
I think the orignal fenders were 94.8% Fender and 5.2% Kluson.

No but really, the question is just if the neck is a Fender neck, and if it is, then it's a Fender neck simple as that.
A licensed body is a licensed replica.

Those who counterfeit and fool around are just swingers.
---End Quote---
Is it a licensed replica or a licensed replacement? If you own a Fender and the neck gets broken, isn't it still a Fender if you replace the neck with a licensed part, and don't you have the right to restore it to as close as original as possible? The same principle applies to a replacement body. There are all kinds of inconsistencies in the logic that argues that you can't replace a part and still call it a Fender. If you contend that a neck cannot have a Fender decal put on it, then it also follows that replacement of any part on a fender with a non-Fender replacement should require that you remove the decal from the the neck of an otherwise original Fender. The neck decal doesn't identify the neck as Fender, it identifies the guitar as a Fender.

Ultimately, to a collector, a Fender with numerous non-original parts is worth less (maybe a lot less) than one that is completely original, but following the precedents set for all kinds of collectibles, there is no reason why a Fender logo cannot be legitimately and legally attached to a restored Fender guitar. Fender could spend a lot of money on lawyers trying to insist that you don't have the right to modify their guitars and still call them Fenders, but ultimately it would be legal bullying, not based on law or precedent.

The application of a Fender decal to a non-Fender guitar is a separate issue, and there is no entitlement to do something like that, even for your personal use or satisfaction. You certainly can't expect to take a homemade guitar out in public with a Fender label on it, and expect to not cause annoyance with Fender. If you keep it in your basement and no one else ever sees it, the damage to the Fender name is essentially zero, but the more the guitar is exposed to the public, the more potential is has to damage the Fender reputation, and I don't think an individual gets to decide whether the quality of their homemade guitar is a positive or negative addition to the Fender name. (Interesting exception: Jack White's exquisite custom "Gretsches", buit by a custom builder not apparently licensed by Gretsch, but such a great endorsement for their products that no objections have been made, at least not publicly.) Partscasters with significant Fender content are a gray area; personally in the case of a partscaster (as opposed to a replacement) I think a Fender body makes a Fender guitar, although, ironically, the hardware and electronics are probably what gives a Fender its most distinctive sound characteristics.

No but really, the question is just if the neck is a Fender neck, and if it is, then it's a Fender neck simple as that.
A licensed body is a licensed replica.

I think there is actually a pic of that on the Musikraft site if you look under the strat neck section.

I find it interesting that they are picky about such details, but leave out much more noticeable things like the position of the truss-rod adjustment lug and lack of curve on rosewood slab boards at the headstock...just an observation. I do think they make nice necks in general, I just wish somebody would make a true vintage-correct copy one of these days. I guess I'll keep making my own!

mcgeorgerl, since I took those photos I've started sanding the top layers off, only I don't have a belt sander so it is slow going. I bought a 36 grit belt and glued it to a 2x4 and have been going over them. That is a great tip on the metal detector, my dad has one I can use and I'll certainly be doing that now. Thanks!
