What sounds like an AC 15?

If your willing to go close to 2K new

The Top Hat Supreme 16 it is MY favorite amp

it is a 2 channel el 84 amp based on the AC15

Both channels have hi and lo inputs

both channels have a Bright and Fat switch

both channels share a trim pot

the Top boost channel uses 3 12ax7's

has Bass Mid and treb, and Gain

The other channel is one EF86 tube of pure tone with only a Volume Control

This amp in my opinion can cross territory from Fender to 18 watt Marshall and Liverpool Vox chime on the Top boost channel

The EF 86 channel is pure Vox Tone like the monster tone of Queen, AC/DC and any Classic Vox Hard Rock Tones you could want to dial in

Rather then break it down for you this is from their web site

The field is thick with this type of amp and a field tough to beat. We also wanted to provide this in an Aluminum chassis Head version, especially useful for those working in a studio environment. We found the Aluminum chassis brings a lot to the table, sonically. Much of this is very hard to put into words. Put simply, it is more alive or lively, presenting a more transparent sonic field.

There are two things that have come onto the market in the last year or so that allow higher levels of correct breathing tone to occur. One is the EZ81 rectifier tube. This is the original rectifier used by 18-watt Marshall's and the Vox AC15 (which our Supreme Sixteen is based on) amps. This tube has been out of production for decades, yet very necessary to feed a 2-EL84 amp the right amount of current. The other item is the Celestion Blue Alnico. It is my personal contention, not verified officially by Celestion, that the Blue Alnico has been upgraded with the "glues, parts and pieces" used on the new Heritage Series speakers, also made with the "Blue", in England. This speaker has come along way from where it has been the last 10+ years. It now allows all the great things to happen, like the originals. THIS IS A GREAT BREAK THROUGH! When we went to drawing board to design this masterpiece, we started with what we believe is the best 2-EL84 platform of all time -- the early 60's AC15.

This platform is different than an AC30 and can only be reasonably done with 2 power tubes. We also believe this platform to be superior to the 18-watt Marshall design, for a variety of reasons. We then chose to provide the EF-86 channel, with its' original fat/bright switch and single volume knob along with a second channel that has the full EQ, master volume Club Royale preamp design, with its' fat-off-bright switch. To keep the head a portable size, we moved the cut knob to the back panel. This works on both channels, as it is in the power section of the amp.

Part of the magic of this design, is the far less common use of a large choke. Simply put, this coil affects the way the amp compresses and breathes. It causes a feel unlike any other. It is very hands and ear friendly. It also matches up with the Aluminum chassis and new found papery clarity of the Blue Alnico. The Aluminum chassis has welded corners and been fully powder coated and silk-screened on the outside, utilizing no faceplates. The head and speaker cabinets are finger-joined 15mm Baltic Birch plywood, covered in two-tone vinyl with an Art Deco inlaid piping design surrounding the new style round, lit up logo.
---End Quote---
I run it through a seperate Top Hat 2x12 cab with Celestion Blues

And a Marshall 4x12 with Greenbacks

Folks, need some help.... have a silverface twin with JBL D120's; just got back one of the JBL's from being reconed.....had a terrible brain lapse; how should the white and black speaker leads be wired? The JBL has red and black speaker posts.......white to red; or white to black; and then red to red post (speaker to speaker) same color wire; or is it red to black post same color wire? UGH! Wired in parallel? And on top of that; I have heard that JBL's has posts that are reverse from other speakers....true?:roll:

1. Possible stand by switch that is grounded. You need to feel comfortable on the inside of the amp.
2. Measure the resistance of the PT primary. With the amp unplugged and the power switch on you should see about 2 ohms DC resistance on the hot and neutral prong of the power cord.
3. Possible pin of the power tube socket going to ground. Check for continuity between ground and the pins of the sockets.
Good Luck

DH82C, I wish I knew enough about electronics to know the 'why' that is the heart of your question. I will make this observation... That -34V in the Princeton circuit is the bias voltage. The trem circuit in that amp varies this bias voltage to different degrees according to the Intensity setting to achieve the effect. The VibroChamp's trem circuit is hitting a self-biasing or cathode biasing situation, also....but, as, JJmantele notes at a different point in the circuit...namely the cathode of the driver half of that 12AX7....and varying that bias point. That variance determines the output of that driver that hits the grid of the power tube. jjmantele has seemingly done some comparisons in his builds, and I am going to trust his evaluation of what is going on in a single triode versus a dual triode trem circuit. His analysis and that of Gerald WEber that led him to mod the VC for a smoother effect does leave me with the impression that in fact the VC's trem circuit does result in a stronger effect....that is, more effective in the 'on and off' of the volume variance. Choppy is WEber's word for the result of the stock VC's circuit.

I think that's it, too. Most of us aren't really "inspired" by the sound of a tube amp on "1" or "2" -- probably because the THD is still really low at that point, and the power supply isn't sweating at all. A solid-state amp is like that all the way up the dial.

I know that for for SS Jazz amps, at least, some companies are offering hybrid amps -- sporting a preamp with a single 12AX7 tube to supposedly "warm" the sound. Certainly this is not an expensive thing to do. For example, Jazz Kat amps has the PhatKat and the TwinKat (http://www.jazzkatamps.com/twk.htm):

Image: http://www.jazzkatamps.com/images/tk25.png

which has two preamps: a SS and the 12AX7 tube one you can switch between. I've been wanted to try it out, but no dealers near me.

Another company that used to do this is Evan's Custom Amplifiers (http://www.evansamps.com/), which are popular with steel guitarists and jazz guitarists. They no longer produce a hybrid, but they have added the following knob:

*BUFF*: This solid state preamp control provides beautiful overtones found in tube amplifiers.

Another thing I've wondered about is if there are any pedals that I can use with a very clean (yeah, SS) amp that will give it some clean tubey warmth. I want to be able to play chords cleanly, then kick the pedal in for single lines.

Certainly this is not an expensive thing to do. For example, Jazz Kat amps has the PhatKat and the TwinKat:

which has two preamps: a SS and the 12AX7 tube one you can switch between. I've been wanted to try it out, but no dealers near me.

Another company that used to do this is Evan's Custom Amplifiers, which are popular with steel guitarists and jazz guitarists. They no longer produce a hybrid, but they have added the following knob:

BUFF: This solid state preamp control provides beautiful overtones found in tube amplifiers.

Another thing I've wondered about is if there are any pedals that I can use with a very clean (yeah, SS) amp that will give it some clean tubey warmth. I want to be able to play chords cleanly, then kick the pedal in for single lines.

For that amp, set everything like this picture except move the dials to anything I have marked red. That will make it as clean as the amp gets.

No doubt I picked a bad clip, but I guess having played it I can hear through the bad video mic, etc.

Looking forward to your clip, Will.

I should say that this amp doesn't sound like Rivera (my personal favorite) or whatever. I never expected that. But I like how it sounds for how inexpensive it is. It's almost funny the kind of junior high level of poking fun at Bugera that this has brought out.

YouTube clips can be tricky. I haven't seen an absolute accurate representation of this amp tonally yet just compare this clip to the V22/AC15 shoot out clip that's on YouTube. The tone is a polar opposite and fairly dark and laking definition. The actual sound is kinda between these 2 extremes.

I wouldn't remove the transformer, just pull the whole amp out. It will be easier - it's 4 screws and slide it out. If you remove the transformer it will be dangling by its wires, which could cause problems if you're not careful. I have the super 112 and it was pretty easy to do the speaker swap. I have the Vintage 30 in mine now and love it.

has anyone compared these two amps? i have briefly looked at the vox and heard some of the tones at GC. a week or two ago i ran the sound board for a small venue and the lead used a cube 30 that surprised me. it was setting on a peavey session amp, but he stated he was only using the cube and a boss compressor. any input would be great, thanks.
