Plus one on what rand z and the good Dr. Davis have to say.
---End Quote---
I completely disagree. If The Beatles' appeal was limited to those who witnessed them in their early days, they WOULD be a fad, since only that generations would appreciate them.

The truth is quite the opposite- there's something about them that transcends generations, and many other social boundaries as well.

I'm not saying they didn't have a huge impact in the 60s, but that's only one small piece of what they are.

What's so great about the Telecaster? We've seen threads like that before, and they're much the same- you can list attributes that you like, but there are always other guitars that have the same features, but still lack the mojo.

To steal George's line, there's just "something" about them.

BTW, we can't talk Liberal/Conservative here.

Left is right and Right is a closed thread.

We need to stick with generalities to keep the discussion alive.

My point is that if a person's decision to join the "green team" is expressly for perception by others in public, but then that same person pours used engine oil in the field behind his house when no one is looking, I find that to be morally reprehensible.

At what point did it becoem unacceptable to mod American guitars?

I'm talking out of my butt here, but the way I see it, as far as modern production guitars, there are two catagories. The Pro who sees the instrument as a tool, and thinks nothing about forking over 2k or more for the tools of his/her livelyhood. -And thinks nothing of changing those tools to meet their needs.

Then there are the enthusiasts. The amateurs. The ones that worship the gear beyond it's value as a tool. They are infatuated with the instrument itself just as much or often more than actually playing it. They also might see it's pricetag and see it more as a luxury item, a status symbol, they've always longed for a guitar on that level. Whereas a Pro has always had and always will have gear on that level. Its their tool. I believe when a pro finally does have a strong, loyal connection with a particular guitar, it's probably out of experience with the instrument, not the cost of the instrument.

And yes, I'm certainly in the amateur category. If I would have won the Grand Prize for the TDPRI drawing I would have REALLY wanted to add a neck pickup and put some sort of half sized pickguard on it (clear with metallic paint underneath, Gretsch style). BUT seeing it's a Custom Shop, and I'll never own a Custom Shop, I would have been way to chicken to do any permanent mods to a $4000 guitar, especially one that is part of a limited run. So there you have it. Its all perspective of the user.
---End Quote---
I think in the second category of amateur there might be the need for more purchases, ongoing mods (vs. initial one time approach) and yes "lawyer guitars" as I once heard PRS guitars referred to...and with respect to Teles and in self-contradiction a kind of misguided sense of purism.

I think overall the pros are less obsessed about gear more focused on playing.

The Gibson that I love ceased to exist around 1970 or so.

Why the blind allegiance to a company that has made either garbage or over-priced hoo-hah for decades ?

Oh - you mean innocent until proven guilty ?

Go back to the original thread and check the pages of stuff Gibson employees have to say about him.

If this whole thing means the company is weakened and folks lose their jobs - not good.

If, however, they jettison the mad man and the company starts to get smarter and stronger then - great.
