Hi all. First time poster and guitar newbie here.

I've had my V5 since 2011, playing mostly with a 2011 American Special strat. I've been experimenting with tubes and found that JJ EL84 works great in the power stage. I've had Tung Sol 12AX7, EH 12AX7, EH 12AY7, Sylvania 12AV7 etc in there. The 12AY7 made it bright enough, but had a nasty ring when turned up a bit, especially with the Hardwire RV7 as wet as I like it. Same with the 12AV7.

My pedal board has Joyo chorus, tremolo and delay, Hardwire RV7 and a Mesa Boogie V-twin on it, in that order. The V-twin has 2 TungSol 12AX7s in it, which work nicely and seem to take some of the mushyness out of both channels.

Only yesterday I installed a Jensen C8R and a TAD 12AT7 in the amp and it made all the difference in the world! The cleans are wonderful and when I turn it all the way up, I can control breakup with pick attack and the volume knob. Highs are well defined, there is more and better bass than the stock speaker and with the mids scooped on the Mesa I can get a rather fendery tone from my rig.
There's no real distortion to be had from the amp, but I can get that with the Mesa when I want. Can't wait to hear what the speaker turns into when broken in.

The V5 is quite ok with stock tubes and speaker, but with better tubes and that Jensen speaker it really shines. All in all I paid less for this than a Super Champ X2 head would cost. Needless to say I'm very pleased with the results :)

My CD30 is up and running, and I've been gigging with it, both in a jazz duo with an upright bassist, and with my blues 'n' soul band. I'm still experimenting with the settings -- although it has no modeling or other gizmos, there are a lot of tones in it to experiment with, especially in fine tuning the "drive" channel settings. A tiny change in the the amount of gain makes a huge difference, and everything is slightly different at gigging vs. living room volume. I might post some videos in the near future.

In retrospect, I wish I'd never heard of the "+" series. They should call it the "-" series. I bought two VT40+'s , horrible "snare hiss" on them and both died within a week.

Still love my AD50VT

The difference in VOLUME between the overdrive tones compared to the clean tones is significant TO ME.

But don't trust my ears, listen with your own... Preferably before you buy.

Peace out.

The volume difference is generally true with a lot of modeling amps. I've got a Tech 21 Trademark 10, which is analog, and its cleans are much lower in volume compared to the British and California settings. The same is true with my Digitech and Boss pedals. A "high-gain" sound would generally be louder than a clean or low-gain sound.
