How good is the VHT Special 6 Combo?

I can't praise the Special 6 enough! I know a lot of modders have changed board components and the like. I found my SP6 to sound like a boutique amp by changing the stock speaker to a Jensen Electric Lightning 16 ohm 10", and changing tubes to a EH 6L6 and a Tung Sol 12AX7. That's it. I hope someone else will follow suit and report back to me. It is almost unbelievable, the added volume, clarity, and grind the amp now has!

Takes 5 minutes to swap out the cheapo fender tubes for decent ones. Another 5 to tighten the screws on the tube sockets. You must be severely booked-up, timewise...GREAT sounding amp.

Actually, I went through the whole amp tightening up everything that had a screw. Even though it was buzzing like a bee hive (something inside the chassis), I also swapped out tubes to see the tone - not bad. You do have to want very dark or very bright with the stock amp.

I had every intention of keeping the amp and perhaps adding the mod to replace the tone switch with a pot. After reading on the internet...many stories of failed attempts to resolve buzzing...I swapped the tubes back and called it a day.

I was actually rather sad to do that. Perhaps this was one of the early ones.

..and 'yes', I am usually very booked up. Not enough time to fiddle with this...I'll just stick with my BF Fenders.

Yeah download the tone stack calculator and move the knob settings on the vox tab. All will become clear!

I tend to start at half and adjust if I feel the need. If its a good vox into well matched speakers, I often don't.

Here she is with one of her playmates. The dealer gave me a really good price on her that I couldn't get on the Fender, which sealed the deal. I'm looking forward to getting to know her a little better.

Nope, even if it was an issue, replacement would be no big deal. Something like a Hammond 1750E or any 5E3 OT. If you want a bit more zip from these amps, add a bypass cap or two to the preamp tubes.

Sombrero Top is correct on this - you can verify with chassis serial number.

I have a 74 SFSR that is absolutely wonderful. Orange Stripe grill cloth like yours. Interestingly, it also came from the Austin area and sounds better than a BFSR I used to own.

Yes, it's big, it's heavy, and can get quite loud...........and yes, I use several smaller amps much more often these days, but...........it sounds sooo wonderful when I do fire it up, I know it will always be with me.

IMO they still work pretty good, (though a bit more of a subtle improvement) in front of the amp if you make it the last effect in your chain going to the amp input.

I have ran mine out front with good results. Seems to work even better if you have a large chain of effects.

In the loop of Blackstars (and many other amps) they are tremendous. Should come as standard equipment in the BS's!

I am running one now in my Mesa Mini Rec effects loop with the same stellar results.

It's one of those things that you would never miss till you try and hear it... then you dont want to play without it, ever.

Yeah, I just happened to go on and check one night and actually had to do a double take at the price. Was on the phone with the store 30 seconds later and placed the order. Some deals you just can't pass up.

My latest Pet Peeve is so called Fender "Sphinx" glides on eBay. I think I just used my last set. They were NOS and so old the plastic string package they were packed in dried out and cracked.

The eBay story is "Fender used 1" glides in the '60s".

No, they didn't.

To complete the supterfuge the sellers show a pic of genuine Fender glides.

Real Fender glides are 1 1/4". Mojo sells the 1" glides. They're cheap if you have a Mojo account.

They get a lot more expensive when you buy them from the guy who bought them from Mojo. I can't really bitch about that. That's the way retail works.

The zinger is when you pay six bucks shipping on top of your six buck glides.

The part that really annoys me is when people promote ignorance and capitalize on it.

I really think that's the answer for the 5E3 guys who think they don't get enough headroom. Big cab and a great speaker. Suddenly you hear things the amp was doing that weren't making it as far as your ears before, and it becomes much more useful than a little grindy box that's never loud or full-sounding enough in a group.

Fender Blues Deluxe RI-reverb question

I have this same issue. There really isn't much difference in the reverb channel between about 3 and 10. I was starting to wonder if the reverb tank just didn't work and I was thinking about stopping by Guitar Center just to play a different one to compare. I'll be interested to see the responses to this.

I think that's a really good combination. I learned to play on a clean Fender amp using a single coil Stratocaster copy. I didn't have any effects because I didn't have the money to buy them. I never turned my amp up loud enough to distort back then. My parents would have a fit and I never really wanted to do that anyway. I didn't see amp distortion as a good thing at the time, and I'm still somewhat of a clean freak to this day. Two of my main amps are a Twin Reverb and a JC-120.

All in all, I think these 'restrictions' probably made me a better player and helped me forge my own unique style.

If you have the 25uf/50v toss it in there. If it does hum you can swap it out latter but I'm betting it'll be fine.
Alot of guys do use a 100uf/100v in the bias circuit might be the ringing in my ears but I can't tell one from another.

Yeah, I heard about the being able to reach the 30 watt point, but I'm sure you gotta go with another OT for more plate voltage. All I did with mine was change the OT and made the octal conversion so I can run 6v6s or 5881s. The "twin stack" mod will probably give the tone you're lookin' for.
