And, believe it or not, part of the allure to me is to listen to the band and see how they play so well so many different songs.

I was even a fan of The Next Great American Band. Yes, I'm the one person that watched it.

For the first time ever....

I gave it a try this week. Was travelling on business and had nothing else to do. I'm just not a fan I guess. They elinated several people. And then it seemed like one by one they brought them all back! Also, the puerto rican dood... Is that elton john song all he knows? I don't honestly see a lot of talent or charisma. Again, just my opinion.... -Eric

Even though I do watch it, I have to agree with you.

I've stated this before, but I'm somewhat amazed that with tens of thousands of people auditioning, this is the best they can come up with.

I guess it just goes to show that a real quality singer is rare and hard to find.

I can understand why singers love the show..... but as a guy who has worked with a lot of chick singers in bands over the years.... I just dont get why guitar players would be interested in this show at all. Seems to me it just furthers the notion that we're all disposable, faceless back-up-b*tches and its ALL ABOUT THE SINGER. I get enough of that in real life with bands... in the past, told to our faces that we (the players) dont matter, our singer is everything, we're nothing without her, all this hateful stuff....that drove me crazy.

American Idol has in no small part, helped to ruin the band bar scene in atlanta, so many bars have simply gone to karaoke. And now its so difficult to find a really good singer for your band, they all are out at the karaoke bars. They've finally figured out they dont need a band, they only need a box, and why should they put up with being in a band when they only wanted all the attention for themselves anyway.

Anytime anybody brings up Idol and starts yammering about the celebrities, i mean contestants, and asks my opinion, i simply ask them to name one single person in the band that plays the music.

Not one person has ever been able to answer.

If you guys like it, carry on, the show is certainly well-produced, i've watched the brief bit here and there during the initial train-wreck auditions, but even those seem staged or planted for ratings.
I aint buyin' that part about the disposable backup...
If that's what any musician is, it aint because of American Idol. It's because that's the level they push themselves to.
Plenty of guitarists, drummers & keyboard players have been synonymous with the sounds of the bands they've played in over the years...Page, Beck, Gilmore, Howe, May...Just to name a few guitarists who were not replacable or interchangeable in any way.
That said, I don't totally disagree that some singers can & do seem to get all the notoriety. But in a lot of cases, it is the singer who deserves it, as the front person & face of the band.

OK, the first kick-offs of the season by the public....I thought the vote was right on with the 17 year old girl; of the ones remaining, she just didn't have it...not so sure about the kid from Puerto Rico; he just picked a bad song....

How bout the new rule where the judges can save one of the contestants that has been voted off? Since they can use it only once, I'll bet they'll save it till the end.

Kelly Clarkson performed and, to me, just sounded so-so. Was I imagining it or has she really beefed up??

I've always loved KC, no matter what her weight...but that song!!! My Life Sucks Without You??? (cringe)

They shoulda voted off that Kenya West guy...he obviously can't sing in pitch w/o help from silicon chips.

None of the remaining contestants keep my attention.

The only impressive part of the whole hour was Paula's cleavage.

America got it right. While Jasmine certainly can sing, she lacks stage presence. Jorge picked the wrong song. Put America to sleep and they vote you off the island. It's that simple.

Kenya West was horrible.

Kelly Clarkson seemed a bit out of sorts. And yes she did put on some recent weight. I don't know when they shot the video for that song, maybe 3 months ago, but she seems to have put on 20-30 unneeded pounds since then.

I have to disagree with the judges last night. Adam's interpretation and performance of "Ring of Fire" was outstanding. Was it country; hell no. Was it cool to hear, hell yes. It's like the dude channeled Jim Morrison. One of the best performances ever on AI.

Depends; if the singer was supposed to be doing country, Adam sure wasn't doing country, he did a country song his way. If the point of doing different genres of music is to see how well-rounded you are as a singer, he didn't do a good job. Lil Rounds kinda struggled with her song since she isn't a country singer either (and admitted it), but she pulled it off quite well. Alexis, Danny and Matt sounded very good. You never can count out the 16 year old, Allison, but, to me, the performance of the night was from Tatoo Girl, Megan, even though she was fighting the flu, she sang amazingly well.

The others.....meh.....

What time do you think he'll be on so I don't have to watch the whole show?

Tatoo chick is hotter than a stolen tamale and sounded great....that full arm tat is not happening for me however...can't understand why a beautiful girl would want to do that.

+ 200%

I forgot to mention, before, Simon's last week best quote of the show ever:

During the judges' critique, one of the contestants said "I was trying to be artistic."

Simon replied: "You can be artisitc. Just not on this show."

Priceless.
