Mod kits?

Any one have likes or dislikes for the mod do it yourself overdrive kits? I'm looking for a decent tube overdrive without spending $500 on a vintage big muff...

Proportionally, they are even more overpriced than chi-chi stomps, if you can imagine such a thing.

I've seen "mod kits" at over $20 for roughly eight cents in parts.

If you know the mod, just do it with parts you dig up yourself for nothing off dead electronics, or at least get more economically-sourced new parts.

Do you know of any sites with plans? I was really interested in these because of the chassis and everything included type of deal it is... BUT I def do not mind saving a few dollars if at all possible!!!

If you're looking for a Fuzz, Seymour Duncan is blowing out the current line of pedals... the Tweak Fuzz is going for well under the $99 MSRP at most retail music outlets.
That said, the BYOC line of ODs and distortions get my double thumbs-up.
I've personally built their OD and Large Beaver.

80 cents?? Haven't seen one of those yet. You are paying for the intellectual property of the parts kit, which in reality is a fairly small mark up on the parts. You get all the instructions, the exact parts you need, and support from the vender if you toss it up. Parts kits are VERY reasonably priced for what you get, IMHO.

I was just looking at the BYOC site. I looked at the big muff clone (aka large beaver) and the DS-1 clone... But I noticed that the DS-1 kit was almost 90 bucks. I paid 60 for my REAL orange wonder! Haha I know that the other pedals on there are some deals but I just thought that one was funny... Haha

I'm not a big DS-1 fan, so I can't speak to it directly, but have you checked out the forum?
Typically, BYOC kits contain many mods/options that a standard pedal doesn't.

But, yea, they're not the most "economical" option for a DIY pedal kit, but IMO, they are the best option for a newbie DIYer or someone who isn't into sourcing all of their own parts.

I did notice that they had dif options on the wiring PDF (which is awesome for people who can source their own parts!!!). You can even buy the board individually. NICE!!!

Actually, I said EIGHT cents, and I have. The worst I remember was a cap and two red LEDs for $20. If the seller dropped more than eight cents on that, he needs some lessons in sourcing.

The concept of "intellectual property" as regards trivial dirtbox tweaks from non-engineer hobbyists is pretty risible to me to begin with, but especially when they are virtually always just lifted from some other site or forum anyway. "Oh, I tried a .022mFd cap instead of the .047mFd cap cuz I didn't have one and it sounds so awesuuumer," isn't big science.

There's really no new information out there. None of it is patentable anyway, which is the bottom line on whether there even is such a thing as intellectual property or not.

You're really paying for the hole in the donut.

If you source your board parts right they cost virtually nothing. If you don't, you get eaten alive. I routinely see identical parts go for two cents up to a dollar in a bubble pack...or more.

If you check the dozens of sites and forums you can get all the info and "support" for free.

This one isn't very active, but there are plenty that are.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Fuzzcentral, Geofex, etc., etc., etc.

It was $40 at GC last week, but they're gone.

I'm not sure what's what, but I got one of these SD blowout pedals (a DI box) and found it too noisy to use and sent it back as useless. There are a bunch of threads I've seen griping about the quality of their stomps, but I dunno if this is limited to a certain run or...? This may be behind their being dumped.

It also doesn't really sound like an actual fuzz to me, but rather a distortion pedal.
