Scavaging Mic Pre's from mixer?

Hey guys,

Hoping you might be able to help me out.

I have a Behringer xenyx mixer that has no output. Lights up, no sound. Not worth getting repaired and to warranty has expired for return.

However, I did like the sound of the pre amps and was wondering if I could "pull them out" add some power and create a diy preamp?

Is something like this possible? I'm thinking it was "powered" in the mixer I should be able to "power" it outside of the mixer.

Thanks for any insight you might have!

KC

I would just dump it, you would need a power supply anyway for it to work outside of the mixer and it appears that is what's busted inside the mixer. there are lots of good value pres out there.

My experiance with repairing mixers. most are connected via ribbon strips, from channel to channel. Open up the mixer and look around inside. You might be able to pull some components, don't let somebody discourage you from trying something as its not like your losing money in digging into something broken thats not worth fixing. the cheap Behringer stuff tends to be loaded down with alot of hot glue holding terminal strips in place.

Let me know what you end up doing. If it works out for you, or end up ditching the idea.

Those Behringer mixers are built with one large circuit board parallel to the control surface with all the components mounted to it. IOW the architecture doesn't lend itself to being broken down into individual strips like a classic mixer.

It's broke so you won't hurt anything by opening it up and poking around. But you'll see that the layout is one integrated whole with maybe another similar large board for more channels.

With classic mixer layouts pulling strips and adding a power supply is pretty common. A lot of vintage studio mixers like Neve and Langevins live on two or four channels at a time.
