GGG Best Pedal?

I'm considering doing one of these GGG or BYOC pedals.

I'm considering the TS Clone because of all the mods you can get for an extra few dollars. BUT the Bluesbreaker clones is cool because it sounds really good, is a pedal that is not really as available now, and it sounds really good, did I say that already?

What is your favorite kit pedal?

It's hard for me to choose one, because there's so many different flavors.

Without some criteria established, it's really hard to say.

I REALLY like the BB V1 kit, that said. It's an excellent quality pcb that will fit in small enclosures, the circuit is simple, and it sounds great IMO - much better than a TS, to me.

I've said on a few occasions that if SRV would have A/B'ed an 808 with the BB, I think he would have gone with the latter.

Another thing to consider - the analogman King of Tone is over 98% BB V1. Actually, it's two of them. So if you build it but want to tweak it, that's a popular way to do it. Since the KoT is two of them, you could build a second one at some later point. The KoT mainly is different in that each "channel" has internal dip switches to let you turn the clipping diodes on or off, and it has a "treble boost" trimpot. The cool thing about having them separate with DIY kits is that you can put the switches and add'l pot on the outside.

I think that all of the GGG Marshall kits are cool, personally. But they also have fuzzes and all sorts of other neat stuff. We've also been kicking around lately how you can modify a Big Muff to turn it more into a distortion pedal, or one that's great for solos.

If you consider building a Bluesbreaker I recommend that you take a look at the Guv´nor too.
I had a Guv´nor for a couple of years and later on bought a Bluesbreaker instead. In my opinion the Guv´nor is the better and more versatile pedal of those two.

Apart from a Korg pitch black I only use two pedals, the GGG PT80 and the Bluesbreaker both of which I would recommend, the Bluesbreaker especially.
I did build my one with a fancy IC, don’t know what difference it made but it’s perfect when I can’t crank up the 18 watter I gig with.
I’m old and I’ve tried and owned two many OD’s but I do like these a lot.

I've done the PT-80, Phase 45, Reverb and Red Llama clone. They all fired up on the first try, very quiet, no rf weirdness, just good quality stuff.

I'd try the Llama clone first. It's a VERY easy build and it's a really unique overdrive. Tubey with the gain set low and sounds like a mild fuzz with the gain cranked. Don't worry too much about what to build first...you WILL build more

Blues Breaker is a great choice. I agree with 11G. It really surpasses the TS808\9 for a light overdrive. And I like it far more for copping the Nashville light grit sound.

and they're easy to build. Not many parts and not much to screw up.

highly recommended.

Howdy Okieactor

I love these threads ... what should I do with the rest of my life ... #:o)

Build a classic 2 knob Tone Bender Fuzz, it'll be in your gig bag for the rest of your playing years ...

http://www.buildyourownclone.com/tonebender.html & http://buildyourownclone.com/esvmk2instructions.pdf

It is one of the greatest guitar tones of all time.

Anyway, what the f@ck does my opinion matter ... build what ever will help you make your music.

All the best with your music.

If you like heavy OD/Marshall-ish sound, try the GG BSIAB2. I don't think anyone else offers a kit of this circuit. Its great! I also have the BB-1 clone. It just doesn't have enough gain for me, which makes it less versatile than other pedals. If you don't have a TS, you really can't go wrong with it, esp if you do all the mods to add more variety and versatility. There are no mods/extras for the BB-1. To me the BB-1 cuts a lot of bass... but a lot of ODs do that!

I went to the GC and tried out a real TS808. Man, the more pedals I hear, the less I like the regular TS's. Too bland for me.

The original Big Muff, the OCD, the Rat, there's lots of pedals out there that are just better, imo. I think it is gonna be the bluesbreaker for my first build, though I am searching for Bluesdrivers, DS-1's and SD-1's on the cheap for me to mod.

Anybody made one of the Big Cheese clones?

I bought the PCB from GGG and haven't gotten around to even sourcing the rest of the parts. Kinda wish I would have just anted up for the olcircuits kit for convenience's sake.

I definitely want to build a BSIAB2. I ordered that PCB too, same story.
