Help on the value of a 1978 P-Bass

An older gentleman at our church asked me to sell his 78 P Bass for him today. It's a beauty. Clear ash body with a b/w/b pickguard and like new hardshell case. The bass has a few small dings and a little buckle rash, but is mostly in very good shape. I adjusted it and gave it a good going over. Everything works great, it sounds and plays excellent. What is the going rate for these? He wants to sell it quick as he need the money, but I don't want to see him take it in the shorts! He also has a Peavey MK bass amp ( head ) he wants to sell. This one looks like it's brand new. I need help on the value of that also. Many thanks for your help!

EBay is pulling pretty good value these days. I've been suprised a couple of times on recent sales, where items went for me thatI thought they would. I'd go there for a valuation.

I haven't been watching the P Bass market lately but I would guess in the $500 range. A '78 wouldn't be that highly sought after. the right buyer comes along though ... and you can never tell.

Assuming that the Peavey is one of the smaller ones (100 to 125 watts) and is a head, figure around $1.00 per watt. Maybe a tad more.

I just sold a near mint Hartke 3500 at $270 which was about $25 more than I guessed.

Hope that's helpful. Mal

You'd be surprised what a late '70s P will bring!

eBay is definitely the place to sell it to get as much bread as you can.

Regarding what late-'70s Ps are worth, check out what the Swami at the Bass Palace has some priced at. He's got one tagged at $1100!!

Yeah, he has but are you prepared to pay that price? No way man, they are'nt worth that amount of money. £600 tops And thats for a mint condition.
Having said that, there's always someone who'll pay over the odds.
