Paint It Black and then turn it back.

I recently got a parts P-bass with a 75 neck. The guy who brougth it to the music store had found it cheap at a garage sale. The bass had been attacked, basically, by its former owner. The idiot had sawed off the upper horn and painted the neck black. When I say painted I mean . . . headstock, neck, fretboard, etc. The garage sale purchaser did a brave attempt to get the paint off. It partially messed up the logo, but has left the neck and headstock completely down to the bare wood.

My question is what can I put on this neck to perserve the wood. Maybe just something to cover the fretboard? The body is a vintage body with DiMarzio pickups and a Bad Ass II bridge so it's not like I'm trying to restore this bass to its former glory. I just want to protect the neck so I can play it without any worries. Thanks !

The easiest thing would be wipe-on poly. They sell it just about anywhere they sell paint (I got some for a desk top at Home Depot). Very easy to apply, dries quick, looks good.

Cheers, Tim

i would recommend several coats of clear nitro-cellulose. Stew-Mac and Reranch sell it in spray cans. In about a year or so after being exposed to sun light, it will turn amber/yellowish and take on that vintage look once again.
