Bit the bullet and bought a bass rig yesterday.

Got a great deal on a G-K 700RB-II and a G-K 2 x 10 cab so I went for it. I liked the way the 2 x 10 sounded while playing it on the demo racks at several GC's.
Saw a couple of old SWR Workingman's 15 but they just didn't sound good to me and were pretty beat up.
The 700RB-II has enough power to spare and the cab got good reviews on MF.

I'm going to get together with a drummer and maybe a couple of guitar players to see how this rig stands up to them. I'll report on my findings.
I started out just buying the cab but the guy gave me an offer I couldn't refuse on the amp. If you're interested in it I think it'd be worth asking them about making a deal on it.

That's a great amp. 'couple of tips ...

You need to use the Boost to get the amp to 'warm up' and also to get to full power. Start like so ...

EQ - flat, Contour & Presence all the way down (to the left), Boost & Master Vol off.

Jack in and start banging on the E as hard as you would normally play. Bring the Input Gain up till the yellow clip light blinks, then back down a bit. For most passive basses, this was between 10 and noon for me.

Bring the Boost up to between 9 & noon - I never ran mine past noon as things got a little ragged sounding to me - strictly a matter of taste though.

Now bring up the master to your desired volume. In the house - that won't be very far up and you're already sending it a hot signal from the Input and Boost! This assumes a standard speaker cable and that you aren't using the bi-amp feature with the GK Cab. If you are - bring up the woofers to volume and then bring up the tweeter vol to taste.

Now bring the Contour up slowly. Countour is a scoop with a bass boost and a bit if a treble boost. See if you can get to a good sound with it alone. Play with the 4 string / 5 string voicing button - see which you like and forget that it says 4/5 it's just a slightly different set of EQ points.

I found the presence to be not useful - I just don't need that much treble in my amp. So mine stayed off - YMMV as it's a matter of taste.

Now you've got a good basic sound - use the 4 band EQ to make more 'fine' adjustments - knock the hi's down a bit, add in a little upper mid, cut a little low mid or bass to control boom in a weird sounding room.

and of course - experiment to find your sound. The approach above worked pretty well for me but there's a zillion ways to get there.

Nice rig!

Last time I checked, RMC Audio On Lime was $499 delivered for a 700 RB II by way of comparison. They're somewhere in the midwest (Nashville maybe ?) so it's a prety quick ship to anywhere. I bought my 1001 from them and they were painless to deal with.

I got an even better deal than that.
