Gee, my Precision Bass is heavy!

I bought a Paisley P Bass from Ebay last week. It should be here within a week or so. The newer P Bass I have is unbelievably heavy so I hope this one is lighter.

Another question: How does the turnaround to "Born Under a Bad Sign" go? Where he sings "If it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have no luck at all" - what are the notes?

notes wise it's 4, -5 to the 5 5 for a bar, back own through the -5 to the 4 and then the last half of the lick. In E

a / -b / b
b / b / b / b -b / a

then the last half of the lick a / -b / b / d / g / e

Timing wise you'll need to feel through it. Notes wise this is a fiarly traditional approach to it. As in most riff blues, there's a few variations. The feel is WAY more important than the actual notes. I use ghost notes in that song and 'sketch the part' in an attempt to add subtlety to a song that can become sledge-hammer heavey other wise. It makes the song a lot more fun to play as well as you can mess around leading and dragging the beat somewhat. Fortunately my guitarist is willing to play it straight which gives me the freedom to muck about!

Chet, every Pink Paisely P-Bass I played (back when I was looking to replace my wonderful yet heavy P-Bass) was nice and light. So hopefully, yours will be too!

Cheers, Tim

Tim, the Stax original "Born Under A Bad Sign" is in C# so they use the open E for the bounce. In that key, the turnaround is F, F#, G, G#; then ba-dump-dump on the G#, a ghost G# to snap off to the F#, ba-dum, then F#, G#, E, F#, then home to C# on the third string.

That sounds like that may be it. It's kind of hard to decipher though. I'll try it tonight. I haven't been playing too much for the last week because the Striper fishing has started getting hot but it's dying down again.

Hehe

I got to play bass Sunday at church (normal bass player was gone) and I was amazed at how heavy my P bass has become over the years.
In going from a tele, to a strat, to a LP to a Squier '51 and then back the P bass... I needed to get out my back brace...

I once owned a blonde '73 Fender P that weighed a million lbs. I sold it 5 years ago on the 'bay to a collector from Japan. I don't miss it one bit. Nowadays folks are paying giant sums of money for 70's CBS boat anchor basses, because they are now old, which always amazes me.

Still no sign of the Paisley P-Bass and no word from the Ebay seller!
He has a chitload of positive feedbacks so I'm not really worried....yet.

Hey, I'll trade you my old Peavey T-20 for THAT P Bass...my T-20 is, arguably, the heaviest bass I've EVER played!

Lighter than the other one.

I like the look and feel of the Maple fingerboard but I'm used to the Rosewood one.

73 ... mine was tri-tone sunburst. In the interest of science I added a solid brass pickguard and BA bridge. Sheilding and sustain being the goals. The science was, exactly how heavy can a Precision bass get ?... damned heavy was the answer! I was a whole lot skinnier and stronger in those days ...

Flks forget or didn't experience the miracle of Fender quality control in the late 60's through the late 70's. I look at the prices today and just shake my head...

I like it! It's a kind of hybrid between the present-day Precision Bass and the 51 RI P- Bass. It has the rounded body of the modern version and the PU and PU position of the old one.

I do like the 51 RI and hope to have at least a sunburst version at some point.

I'm not normally much of a Paisley fan, but that bass looks GORGEOUS! Congrats!

I love that maple neck....
