51ri BASS Butterscotch and Sting BASS ?'s
Does anyone own one of these? I guess its about the same as the sting but without the name at the 12th inlay.
Does the sting model differ in any other way besides the color and inlay? I thought I saw where something said the Sting had body contours? |

The Sting has body contours and the necks are chunckier. At least the ones I've seen. I'm mostly a J-person but the Sting gets a lot of play because it's fun, feels good, and sounds good ! :)

I have a 2 tone... they come stock with a Duncan Basslines pick-up. The Sting doesn`t... and it sell for more than double the one one I bought. Fun bass and up to Fender Japan`s reputation for quality control. I`m not a bass player... some may say not much of a guitar player either, but I won`t sell my `51 P. Got it to mess around on. You won`t find a simpler design. Mine is 2 pieces of ash.

Mark, the '51 comes in sunburst, too...
I was at a Fender dealer near Baltimore last week (Bill's Music) and they had both a butterscotch and a sunburst up on the wall, both '51 RI, both priced somewhere around $550 or so...
Cheers, Tim |

Picked up a Sting sig a few months ago for £400.
The neck is a touch wider and the body is contoured as opposed to slab. Did'nt know the '51 came with an SD pup tho.... Cracking bass but for me, more of a studio bass than a live stalwart. |

In the Fender Japan catalog it`s listed as the OPB51-95SD. Sells for 95000 yen minus the standard 20% off the top. SD means Seymour Duncan and there is the BASSLINES logo under the pic.
$550. US is still a tad lower than we pay here. The Sting goes for about $ 990 US at todays rates.

I have the Sting, and it's great, but...
...if the '51RI had been available at the time I spent the money, I'd have had that instead, simply on the looks and the uncontoured slab. One-time Tele bass player, y'see..
Nowt wrong with the Sting, it does everything I ask of it, and as that seems to impress who's heard it, I'm happy. I'll just have to get a '51RI as well (burp...)
