Favorite Bass & Amp ???

Thought I would toss this question out to the Bass Group

I got back into Bass a couple years ago,
with the purchase of a G&L Lynx.
Strung up with TI Jazz Flats.
Amp is an Ampeg V4BH, w/SVT 2x10 & 1x15.
Like to play along with the stereo:
Stax, Blues, R&B.

Would like to play out,
but most jams are weeknights,
and an hour's drive to the city.

Liked my G&L so much,
I picked up a Climax bass.
Like the separate Treble & Bass controls.
Can dial in plenty of thump, growl, and bite,
from the single MFD PU.
Similar to the MM Stingray, and G&L L1500.
Strung with TI Power Bass strings.

Howzabout y'all???

jamie

Is this a desert island question?

If it is, (as in "if you were stranded on a desert island that just happened to have electric power, what bass and amp would you choose if you could only choose one?"), then I would have to pick a FenderJazz bass of '62-'65 vintage and an early '70's SVT (making sure it was equipped to run 6550's, which of course would be in abundant supply on MY island). IMHO it has never gotten any better than this.

My main bass is a '98 Lefty Fender P strung with TI flats. I use a POD through the PA. My favoite settings are the Flip-top and the Silverface.

I also have a MIM Jazz bass with a USACG fretless neck. TI Flats again and Fender CS Vintage Jazz pickups. I love it, but the P is my favorite.

Stingray 5 and SWR

I love the flexibility of my rig. Stingray 5 and an SWR Silverado (with 4X8). Get's me through anything...

'75 Jazzbass, maple neck, tri-tone sunburst, SD quarter pounder pups and Badass bridge.
Ampeg SVT-2 Pro with matching 410 cab, doesnt get any better than this for me!

Frankenstein!

My bass started out as a Tokai '57 P-Bass, but I put a Warmoth-made Tele Bass neck on it, and just replaced the stock pickup with a VooDoo pickup (that KILLS!). It also has a new set of TI Jazz Flats. It's pretty much my favorite bass ever (although I was able to play a really sweet '62 Jazz at a blues jam last winter, man that one was a keeper!).

My amp is a Genz Benz ML-200 combo, good tone and fits in the trunk of my Saturn. I've owned both Fender Bassman and Traynor Bassmaster heads, and really dug both (wish I still had the Traynor!).

Cheers, Tim

Yep - Frankenstein !

.... and that would be all of mine I think! So the fav would be the one I'm holding at any given moment. THe two that I pickup to noodle on most often though are my recently completed Tuxedo fretless and the Tacoma CB10 ABG. I'm going to take that one to fretless. Haven't decided between pulling the frets and having another lined fretless or buying a fretless neck from Tacoma. The Tac is the only stock bass I have, I think ...

As for the amp. I really conflicted there. There are so many good ones around today and so many different ways to approach them. If I could afford one, a 60's B15 would be my main recording amp, Paired with a nice sterile solid state 2x10. As it is I'm using Nemesis 2x10 combo more often than not. or a Bassman driving a 1x15 JBL.

Bass gear

My #1 bass is a Yamaha 1500A with two stacked Alnico V single coils, and active electronics. My amp is an EBS Drome 150W combo with a 12" + tweeter. If I need more power I use my Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI to feed the PA.

Fave gear...(drones on a bit...)

Bass: My 'Sting' Precision - love those Telebasses...

Amp: Best amp I ever played through was when we did our little local 'Live Aid' back in mumblemumblemumble. The backline was all suppied by a local music store (this is in Truro, Cornwall) and the 4-stringers (there were only 4-stringers then...) got to use a monster Trace Elliot rig. There was *nothing* this rig couldn't do. 200W head, I think, plus an 18", 2x15", and a 4x10". That's a BIG rig, and it sounded every bit as big as it looked!

OK, cuttin' the nostalgia...my current amp is an Ashdown Electric Blue 150W 15" combo. Really can cut it, insofar as I've used it yet, and would be (and will be!) perfect with another 15 or 2x15 plugged into it. I like 15s...

Not forgetting when I lived in Swaziland! Gear I used there (not mine unfortunately) was a Fender Bassman 50W head, with 2x15 cab. Now that sounded really nice in a small gig setting.

Bass faves

Bass: Any G&L with MFD pickups. The L-2000 and ASAT basses have the best electronics layout of anything I've played (although I've heard the ASATs are prone to neck dive), but there are lots of other models, too. The ceramic-magnet MFDs rawk & rewl. The pickups are so good and the workmanship on the G&Ls is so nice that I can't understand why they haven't totally cornered the bass market. Leo's other other company, MusicMan, offers some very nice instruments also.

Amp: I'm partial to SWRs, but are there are lotsa other good ones, too, particularly Eden. Gimme a 400+ watt SWR head and one of their 4x10 Goliath cabinets and I can play anywere. -- CS

J + B15 = AOK

My '75-ish J into my '61 B15N. That's it for me.

Or the more recent incarnation: my "uptown" upright without an amp.

This week I like

The 68 Jazz...but that may be because it just got new strings. Round wounds. I love the tone of that bass with rounds on it. Next week? who knows...As for the amp,I would have to say my current rig suits my fine. Its a Carvin Pro Bass pre amp with a Spectro Acoustics power amp through a 15" and a 18". I know that is a pretty weird speaker combo, but I tried it just to see what it would sound like last week, and I really liked it, so go figure. 'slaper

'Slaper, that's a 'me' kind of speaker rig!

I want to add a 2x15 or 1x18 to my Ashdown (1x15), and really give it the headroom it deserves.

My P

Heres my Pbass. Another ebay treasure. The guy I got it from actually had a checkerboard pickguard, that was fugly! I slapped in a Duncan Vintage Pbass pickup...smooth! Got T1 Flats on there. Only problem is that the body, although very light ash, was aftermarket, and the strings don't line up even close over the pickup, not sure if the pup rout was misplaced, or if I need to move the bridge a smidge to the right. Playing thru PA only now, a Sansamp may be in my future.

i've played a lot of new and vintage p-basses, but my favorite is my 62ri with labella flats that have been on there for at least 8-10 years; they're just getting broken in. lightweight, bone stock, a killer bass. a modded 65 bassman head with the preamp from the bass channel of a white bassman(cascode)shoehorned in there, running el34's for 60 watts. it's getting a big butt white showman output tranny when i get in the mood to put it in. 1970 B-15T cab with an ev15b clone. a lot louder than you'd think. it's been my only gigging head since '86. it is simply incredible to tape; it sits so perfectly in the track. tone-wise it's a combination of jamerson and keith ferguson, sweaty and as fat as all get out. my buddy(who used to live right behind ferguson's)did a rehearsal with it last night, and after about 10 sessions with this rig still marvels at it. said "man, listen to that! the grease just pours out of it". that about sums it up for me too. tone, baby

What I got

My fave Bass is my (fellow Canuck) Godin Freeway 4 bought new for $600-. Flame Maple top, P/J Pup config. I run it through my (fellow Torontonian) Traynor YBA-2B Bass Mate Combo.
