Vintage Style Thumb (Finger) Rest

Does anyone know of a company that sells the vintage style (one-screw) finger rest for a P-Bass? Like this:

All I can find are cheap looking 2-screw versions like this:

And while that would be functional, they are way too shiny and made of very thin cheap plastic - I have one sitting here that I can't bring myself to install on my 51 RI.

Does anyone know what the original material was?

Thanks in advance for any help...

I have the Black & Molinaro "The Fender Bass" book.
The "Tug Bar" was either a natural finish or black on the early Precisions.
No description of the wood in the book, but it looks like maple.

I would try to find a cabinet maker, and have him copy your plastic one.

Geez, a bass thumbrest has got to be the easiest thing to make - just a rectangle of hardwood, round off 2 opposing corners, drill for a wood screw (or 2).

I've used a piece of oak flooring, or even a block of maple or mahogany, copy your plastic one and sand away. You can do it while watching the evening news and in no time have a nice thumb rest.

If I may be allowed to ask a stupid question!

Why is the thumbrest in that position and not on the far side of the strings, where the thumb would naturally be placed?

The Fender bass thumbrest is a holding/resting point for the fore/middle/ring fingers whilst the thumb is used to thump the strings.
