G&L L-2000 Bass info needed...........
I'm looking at an L-2000 bass that a guy has for sale around here. He said he'd take $350 for it including the hard shell case. Does anyone know anything about these basses and when they were made? The serial number is B 014563 if that's of any help....Thanks, JH in Va.

The short answer is...
...buy that bass!
Unless there is something seriously wrong with it - warped neck, trashed body, shot electronics - and probably even then - its worth the asking price. Anything busted can (usually) be fixed or replaced. Even if you find the neck too big (L-2000's come standard with a P-bass 1 3/4" width neck) or the bass too heavy (some are), you can always pass it on to someone else. Dating by serial # is not an exact science, but B 014563 places it in the early to mid 1980's. That makes it a "Leo-era" instrument (BBE took over after he died in '91), which increases its value to some folks quite a bit. G&L makes some great instruments. Lotsa info at www.guitarsbyleo.com. Post some pictures if you can.

Based on the info you've provided, I agree, it's a steal. AND... if you want to keep it and play it yourself, it's one of the best basses you can get, an extremely versatile instrument with killer pickups. All IMO, of course: my own #1 bass is an L-2000, and I wouldn't trade or sell it for anything. (I also own one of the fretless versions.)
What? Are you still reading this? Go get it!... ;-) CS

I'm gonna buy it....
I'm going to go ahead and buy it. The bass has a blue finish and it's in pretty good shape. It has three knobs but I'm not sure which are right one of them is exactly like the volume knob on a Telecaster and the other two are larger without the grating around the outside like the Tele knob, are those the originals or is the Tele type knob. also there's a battery compartment on the back, are these pickups active?....Thanks JH in Va.

Nice score. Cool color too.
The pickups themselves aren't active, but the electronics are. It does have a bypass mode, so you can run the pickups passively and the bass still sounds just fine. I had an L-2000 from the same era; from memory, I think this is what the switches do: Front (black) - 3-position pickup selector; neck-both-bridge. Middle (red) - series/parallel switch for the pickup coils. You'll know which is which; series mode will be louder and ballsier Back (white) - 3 position. Back is passive mode, middle is active mode, forward is active with a treble boost. The knobs are a master volume (front) and two passive tone cuts; one a treble cut and one a bass(!) cut. I can't remember which is which, but again it'll be obvious from the sound. Enjoy it; it's a great bass /rick |

I now own it!!
I now own the G&L bass and I'm really happy with it.
Mark, it's exactly like the one you posted the pictures of. The case was grundgy but I cleaned it off and the shot some Armor-All on it and it came out like a new one. I'm going to try to score another knob 'cause it's missing one and it was replace with a Telecaster type knob....JH in Va.
