Jazz Bass Audition Suggestions

My student is looking for a tune or two for next fall's tryouts for Jazz Band. She is a very talented bass player so it doesn't need to be simple. Please help us out. TIA

"Sir Duke" -Stevie Wonder. The riffs progressively get more notey each repeat of the verse or chorus when it comes around and it has an awesome solo break that will utilize the whole fingerboard.

Plus it's a shout out to Duke Ellington and jazz pioneers. And the song jams for any genre- my metal band covered it and it was welcomed by our listeners.

"Jazz Band" covers a lot of territory these days. Stevie Wonder would not have come to mind. She needs to find out more specifically what type of pieces they are playing. Modern, Dixieland, Big Band like Glenn Miller, whatever????

A bass player wanting to get into jazz band should be able to:

1. read the school charts
2. walk on changes
3. know jazz blues changes in 2 or 3 keys

If she wants to impress, learning Donna Lee (check Jaco's version!) would probably put her over the top.

If she doesn't already have a copy, advise her to get a copy of Mike Downes' Bass Line Book. Excellent text.

I played the college jazz band where I attended (a long time ago) and I remember a favorite was "In the Mood" Glenn Miller. It is not hard, but it is a nice smooth, classic, walking bass line. If she can do more than one piece, I would do something classic like that, then something really wild.

Moondance by Van Morrison has the coolest endless walking jazz bass line I know. Can`t lose on this one. Take care. Bob
