Flat-wounds?

Anyone prefer a particular brand on a P? I played a bass in a guitar store with a set of these and thought I might try some out.

Thomastik-Infeld for me...

I'm very, very happy with my TI Jazz Flats. I think Just Strings has them for around $35 a set...

Ditto TI Flats

Don't know how they'd do on a P, but they sure sound good on my J.

TI's on a P = nirvana

I have 14-month-old TI JF-344's on my Precision and it sounds absolutely fantastic. I've never heard of JF-344's on a Jazz but I'm not surprised you'd get a good result.

If you do decide to get TI's, just remember they're pretty lame the first month or so. It takes a good 45 days (IMO) before they hit their stride, but -- here's the important thing -- they only sound better as they get older.

~$35 for a set of strings sounds expensive until you realize it's the only one you'll need for, well, years.

What about for Longer scale lengths.

I have a fretless that has a 35" scale and a lot of string don't fit. Can anyone recommend some other set? the JF's that are meant for this scale length are a bit wimpy in diameter (.44-.96 from the juststrings site). How are the LaBella's? anyone like some other brand?

Thanks,

Mark Knapp

On my fretless 'J' it's D'Addario Chromes. Lot's of harmonic content very warm sounding. Has the mwahhh... I use the bottom 4 of a 5 string set to get the extra girth. That requires cutting a new nut in most cases though. The top 4 sound nice as well I was just looking for a really big set to try and this seems to have worked nicely.

On my fretted 4 (also a J) with flat's I'm using Fender Stainless. That bass is a rockin / blues / r&b machine for me. Duncan vintage p/u's and very old school sounding. I like that one a lot!

I did try a set of TI J's and thought they were very good. Not as good as the D'Addiarios in my setup. I like the thump behind the Fender's where I need it though.

.

I'm a BIG fan of the pressure wound strings. Nice in-between string. Best characterists of flats and wounds. GHS Pressurewounds, SIT Silencers, Rotosound 55s

Chromes

I have a set of D'Addario Chroms sitting here on the desk - they weren't long enough. I have GHS "Brite-Flats" on there now, which are really roundwound strings which are ground down.

I've tried 'em all. The best sounding Flat is The TI Jazz but on a 34' scale bass the tension is too floopy for me (but Ok on a 35 scale). D'Addario Chromes are next best to my ears and fingers.

I put a set of Dean Markley nickles on my P bass

and was quite happy with them. The good part about flats is that they sound better after a couple of months, and as far as I can tell, don't ever need to be changed.

Just ask James Jamerson.

It was widely rumored that Jamerson's old strings had lost intonation but he refused to change them and he lost work as a result. Sad.

Flats rarely go dead, but they eventually do lose intonation and become out of tune with themselves.

Flat Wounds

I bought a Hofner a couple of years ago & it had flatwounds on it.I loved them,no noise, smooth,&most of all no fret wear.I think it really depends on what type of music you're playing. If you;re into heavy or hard rock you may want roundwounds, they're much brighter & they may cut thru a couple of guitars.I also put LaBella Flats on my P-bass.I just like the deep tone, &ease in playing.I hope this is helpful.Toms68
