What is your dream bass guitar?

I've always been a p-bass kinda guy. Had a few Squire deluxe models (P body, J neck, P&J pickups) and I really like the playability and variety. The Fender version seems a bit to tacky though. I guess it's the added knobs and finishes. I decided today that the Fender American '57 P-Bass is my dream bass. Sunburst, gold pickguard, maple neck, polished bridge & pickup cover. Sooo dreamy!

While $1450 seems like a lot for an electric or acoustic guitar, it seems perfectly acceptable for a bass. Sounds crazy I know. That said, I'll still NEVER pay that much for a bass or any other guitar. That's a whole lotta dough for a decal. Maybe I'll piece one together some day ;)

So, how about you? What's your dream bass?

A pre-CBS Precision. Since I can't afford one, my second choice would be a '62 reissue, Nash, Lakland or other high-quality Precision-type bass. Can't afford those either right now! I have an MIM Precision that's perfectly fine though.

A 5 string stingray fretless. Of course I'd need a fretted to go with it

A left-handed Rickenbacker 4001CS Chris Squire Limited Edition.
They only made a couple.

There are a lot of basses I would like to try, but I am completely happy with my G&L 2000. I have owned a played a lot of high dollar and vintage basses and the one I have suits me fine. I would like to try a Kramer "The Duke" or an original Steinberger. Would also like to have a hofner or a rick. I had an old Precision. I would not mind having another, but my G&L is a better bass and will do everything the Precision would and more with better playabillity(neck). I have an old Japanese copy Jazz that has a nice growl the G&L does not have (really hot pickups) that I played a lot and keep for old times sake. One of the finest basses I had pass through my hands was an old Yamaha with active electronics an old top of the line model, forget the model number. I could have kept that as my player real easy. Paul McCartney played the same model for a little while.

Oh the Yamaha was a BB1200. If you ever see one of these at a good price, snag it. If it is in good shape, you will be very pleased.

For me - it would be a nice couple of 51' Fender Precision Bass (not RI, to old one) and 1972 Fender Telecaster Bass.
Quite obvious.

Oh, and also, I dream of 70's Fender Jazz Bass with matching headstock.

My brother had a Steinberger. He told me that as soon as he sat down with it he thought, "now why did I buy this bass guitar?"

A long time ago I owned a 1956 Fender Precision. It was light, well contoured, and had that V neck profile. It has ruined me for all other Fender basses.

I am also a big fan of the Rick 4001, but I just cannot bring myself to pay the inflated prices for a used one.

My Dream Bass would be.... I Fender CS 60Jazz bass, A Fender CS P Bass, both a 58 (Maple) and a 60 or early 60's P...... Are they worth the price ? Hell yea !!!

Oh one more, A Ric 4001.

As for the OP asking about the 57 P, I have one they are great. Buy it used, you will save a big chunk.

Cliché I know, but I'd love to get a classic P-Bass with a rosewood fretboard and slap some flatwounds on it for some James Jamerson action.

But I have to admit, every time I pick up my Hamer, or hear someone else play it, I think, "Damn, that thing sounds and plays great!"

Oh, and if I won the lottery, I'd buy the wife a Dingwall Z3:

I'm sure she'd be most . . . grateful.

EDIT: I've also threatened to get her this:

And then I'd get this:

And terrify everyone anytime we hit the stage.

I am lucky enough to have it: 1962 P bass, sunburst. Light, resonant, warm, nicely worn strung with Pyramid Golds. Sits in the mix nicely. Got it from Glen Quan at Satterlee & Chapin in San Francisco in 1981 when I was making $$$ from my first real job. I have never done a set up on it - truss rod and bridge are as I got it.

I have three great basses, but I am still looking for a Philip Kubicki Ex-Factor.
They made an odd, black to dark red sunburst model.
They are light, "hang" just right (no neck dive) and sound great.
Wish Fender/Kubicki would re-make some.
