One For the Pick vs Fingers

Great clip of Freddy King's band playing "Big Legged Woman".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP6H6lMCGgY

Check out the bass player @ 2:10. Love the groove . Coolly laying it down and he's playing with a pick.

Can anybody enlighten me with the bass player's name ?

That sounds decent but real bass players play with their fingers.

You mean the guys who play upright? Yeah, I've never seen one of them use a pick. A bow sometimes...

But us guys who play electric bass guitar, we can use any darn thing we want to!

...and all kidding aside, there is no more inane argument than whether ANY technique is "right" or "wrong"!!!!!!

Musicians make music, all else is irrelevant.

Mr. King better watch out for high winds.... the collar on that shirt just might give enough lift to get him airborne.

Back on subject.... I prefer to use fingers. Honestly its so I don't have to carry picks with me. As far as I'm concerned, its the music, not the tools that matter.

Please don't get me wrong here.
I wasn't presenting a right or wrong.
I'm a finger player and have been for most of my playing days. I don't care how people play. I just thought this was a very cool clip with an amazing bass player. Guess I should choose my post title a little more carefully as not to stir the pot.

Thanks to Broadcaster for the id and link. Cheers !

Another good one in this category would be Matt Freeman from Rancid. You just about can't play his lines without a pick on some songs. He's a good one though, especially on "And out come the wolves" album songs.

If you have presence dimed You can hear a complete tonal difference form finger and plectum on bass. Personally a fingerstyle guy. But I've known some bass guys who use a pick fine.

Depends on how your EQ is set, some guys with a pick sound the same as fingerstyle bass players.

For me, I use my fingers but I admire what Bobby Vega can do with his fingers, a pick or slap. He just grooves!

I've tried to use a pick with Bass, but I cannot get anywhere close to the tone and attack I want. And I play guitar with both. I tried a felt pick and still...nothing

Yeah, that's the problem I have with "fingers", can't get the tone/attack I want.

Back in the day it was really common to have 2 bass players on many Nashville and LA sessions - one would play upright and the other a Fender bass with a pick for that attack. Put 'em both in the mix and it's bliss.

Phil Lesh always uses a pick, for what it's worth. He's an odd duck but he knows what he is doing.
