Rounds or Flats on a 5 String?

OK, I love the sound of my new 5 string, which came with round wounds. However, I'm so used to flatwounds on my Jazz (Chromes) and P (Roto 77s) that I cannot stand the sound of my fingers moving up and down the strings. I tried moving really easily, but that sound is still there.

I specifically left the roundwounds on for "slapping," but so far, our band only plays one song that has a slapping solo, which I do play fairly well - at least I think so!

That said . . . how many of you use flats on your 5 string? I personally like D'Addario Chromes . . . but . . . did I answer my own question?

When I bought my used Shecter Studio 5, I quickly took the round wounds off and put flats on it.

Not for the sound or tone, mind you....Rounds are too rough on my fingers! After a few hours playing on them left my fingers very sore!

You might want to try a brighter flatwound string set (e.g. Rotosound RS775LD), or perhaps D'Addario Half-Rounds, if you think your slap tone isn't bright enough. Personally, I think flats have BETTER and punchier slap tone than rounds, without sounding annoying to the ear, OR dreaded finger noise.

I like flats on my 5'ers but mine are currently strung with rounds.

GHS Precision and Ernie Ball 5 string flats are my faves.

Try the half rounds. Keeps some of the round tone, but much smoother with less finger noise.

Thanks to everyone . . .

After several weeks of roundwounds on my 5, today I opted to purchase a set of D'Addario Chromes (the store was out of EBs).

The fingers on my left hand are speaking to me again!
