Totally different. Taper cores are roundwound strings(bright and zingy) that taper down to the core towards the ball end. The idea is that the smaller wind going over the saddle allows for more string vibration. Tape wounds are round wound strings with a black nylon wrap over them. The idea is to simulate an upright bass. Opposite ends of the spectrum.
