Buying Rondo J-Bass

...there will be sparkles.

Immediately following it's arrival at my door step it shall be stripped, sanded and sparkled.

Nothing like a Champagne Sparkle J-Bass with a maple neck.

I've been thinking about a SX Jazz bass for awhile now...
They are a lot cheaper than a MIM Fender, so I'm curious how they compare.

At least the headstock is very Fender-like (unlike the new Tele's)

I like mine - but it was in need of a fret job when I got it!

Mine seems perfect. I don't wanna sparkle cause I don't wanna mess up the way it sounds!

I just got mine a week ago (SX PJ bass) and it is much better than the Squire, especially for the price. I put on a new set of strings right out of the box and it needed a quick settup also. No complaints about the frets here - mine were good. YMMV

Can't wait to see pics of your bass after the champagne paint...

Anyone know how the neck on one of these compares to a "real" Fender J-Bass?

I have no pictures to prove it but I held a certain 1960 champagne sparkle jazz bass last time I was in bakersfield. Yes that bass. There's a vintage shop a block away from where we played. Coolest place ever. I'll be back with a pic of it.

Here's one:

I am r3eally miffed about not having my camera at that moment. It's a beautiful bass.

Indeed!

Here's a blown up picture of that bass.

You can only see the headstock in that last one... but it's there!

So what is the last word on that SX J-Bass?

I've been looking for a maple neck/fretboard J-Bass. Here I see you guys discussing the SX option.

Looking at it I see there is a nice natural ash body version with bound and inlayed maple neck/fretboard.
It has jumbo frets though, I much prefer medium size frets, but considering the price ...

From what I've heard here, they're worth more than you pay

I like P/J basses, but prefer a P-style body.

Yeah - however you don't pay that much. Play one, then play somehting further upscale and you can feel the difference. My take on it is that for a lot less than a Squire you're getting a bass that is more or less equivalent... not an instrument that I'd be happy with long term... YMMV and all that...

So it's good quality intermediate level in your opinion? I do plan to get one soon, but I'm curious what to expect.

I got mine in last night. buzzed like crazy straight out of the box, I leveled the frets and now she plays like a dream. beautiful neck but crappy hardware, the pickups sound alright, better than I would have expected.
