Flat wounds on a string-through bridge?

I just purchased a used Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass TB through Music Go Round - it should be here in a couple of days. I'm sure it'll come with round wound strings and I'm sure I'll be wanting to replace them with flat wounds. Is it possible to use flat wounds on a string-through or does that put too much strain on the windings? Also, this is a full scale bass - do I need to get extra-long strings for a string-through design, or will long work?

Thanks.

Are you sure it's a "string-through?"

Just learned somthing new . . . I thought all P basses were top-loaders!

Anyway, I use flat wounds on all my string-through Jazz basses, why wouldn't they work on that one?

Yeah, no problem with flats. Heck, they didn't even start putting roundwounds on basses until sometime in the later 60s, right?

As for the length question, I THINK 34" scale length strings are long enough, but maybe someone who has a '51RI will chime in...

On that particular bridge, medium and light flats will be OK, but heavier ones (like the Fender 9050M or big LaBella sets) will have problems on the E and possibly the A.

9050Ls will work fine, but you may have a problem with lateral movement if the round saddles aren't grooved or notched.
