Just bought a Ibanez Bass...

I haven't owned a bass for a few years now. I'm not a bass player, but have played ocassionally, and did gig on bass for about 6 months for another band.

I was originally going to order a bass from rondo, one of the SX models, but then started looking around on E-Bay. I really couldn't believe how little $$$ you could buy name brand basses for.

So, I had been placing a few bids and watching several auctions. I then came across a Ibanez EDB605 Ergodyne 5 string bass with nice bag. I had never done any research on the Ergodyne models, so I started checking a few sites. Guess this bass was made back in the 90's, and was made (formed) from what is called "luthite". This is suppose to be similar to graphite. From what I can tell, the neck may be made from the same material with a rosewood fretboard added. I say this because the neck is painted the same color as the body (gray pewter).

If anyone has any info or comments on this bass, I'd sure appreciate it. I won't be receiving it till sometime next week; it's coming from West Virginia and headed for Indiana. It's in mint condition, Vol., P-up Blend, and 3 band EQ. I'm pretty excited!

Still have my G-K Backline 2x10 combo, and with the low B string, I'll probably be looking for a 1x15 cab to put under it. I had an SWR 1x15 cab that I used with it and it sounded really good. So, a compact 15 cab is what I'll be looking for.

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to share with everyone. Pics as soon as it gets here, I promise.

Peavey?
You mean Ibanez, right? The ergodynes were made in the '90's-'00's if I'm not mistaken. The body consisted of some synthetic material called lutherite. They were catering to the nu-metal crowd with odd shapes and cut-aways that made slapping/popping easy.
I've played an active ergodyne... this made the body material moot, but it had a good sound and lots of tonal variety.

Don't know that specific model but I can't recall not liking an ibanez bass that I've played, especially those from the 80's or 90's. The craftsmanship just seems superb to me.

Ibanez is known for their bass necks. I've got a couple, and played others; they've all been nice.

Thanks Tim, I changed the title when I edited the post, but it didn't work for some reason.

About 4 years ago, I owned 6 basses: 4 Peavey and 2 Ibanez (3-4 string, 2-5 string and 1-6 string). I agree that Ibanez makes some awesome playing basses, as does Peavey. Honestly, I wouldn't have been able to play any other 6 string other than an Ibanez; the necks are so slim and comfortable.

I was all set to order an SX from Rondo, until I started looking around on E-Bay and a few other used gear sites. So I started keeping close watch on a few auctions and asking questions, and before you know it, I've paid for an Ibanez 5 stringer!

I've never owned any guitar or bass that wasn't made out of wood, so this "luthite" made bass will be interesting to say the least. Read a lot of good reviews about this series, only complaint from a few was the weight. So I'm hoping it's NOT a boat anchor!

Thanks for all the help and comments, really appreciate them!!

Pics to come, I promise (again).

I got the bass Tuesday afternoon, about 5:30pm. Gig bag is a little rough on the outside, but is very well padded and does what it's suppose to do.

Cosmetically, you couldn't ask for a nicer looking bass! Barely a ding on it, sans just a few the size of the head of a pin, but otherwise looks almost new. Needed a good cleaning, tho.

Of all the Ibanez guitars & basses I've owned, I've never had one that played badly, or needed much of a set up. This one, however, needed one badly! I've been 2 days getting the neck straightened out. Auction said neck was straight and it played superb. Well, I don't think so. Not that the bass was unplayable, but it sure wasn't "superb". So, after 2 days of truss rod adjustments and lowering the saddles on the bridge, it plays pretty well now. Only concern is that the low B and high G string saddles are as low as they will go. The action could be better, but it appears I would have to put a shim in the neck pocket and give the neck a little back angle.

I've got new strings on the way and when I take off the old strings, she'll get a good & proper cleaning. Guess I'll have to decide if the action issue is worth the trouble of removing the neck and putting in a shim. As I said, it plays pretty well now, and a friend of mine who plays bass is coming over this evening to take a look and give her a play. I'll see what he thinks and then decide.

I've spent a couple hours going over her and cleaning/polishing her as much as I could without taking her apart. I LOVE this color! I know, you can't see it just yet, but I will take care of that today or tomorrow.

Any comments or suggestions always welcome. Thanks for being patient with me...

Pics, finally...

Not the best pics, especially since it looks like a "burst". But it's all one solid color. I've had so much trouble this morning, getting pics to download! If I get some better shots, I'll post 'em for sure.

I finally got the neck straightened out, and think I'm going to hold off on the neck shim. I played a new Ibnez SR505 at GC over the weekend, and except for the neck shape, this Ergodyne 605 plays just as well. The SR505 has an assymetrical neck I think, so it has a different feel. But playability wise, this one seems to be fine now.
