Well, here I go with my actual bass, I took out the tone circuit (and the knob), added a few stickers (and removed one of them) and screwed a "bridge" cover :

Okay, but nothing could be LESS punk than a 5-string fretless no matter what you do to it.

Haha, +100
Well, except maybe removing one or two strings and making new frets from scrap, the more poor quality, the better.

When I think of a punk bass I think of a beat to crap '80's P-Bass covered in stickers and decals with dried blood on the pickguard.

No, no, you're wrong. You meant 60's J-Bass covered in stickers and decals with dried blood on the pickguard.

This old thing has been around the block a few times. It was gigged with a band through the punk period before I got it. Ok, so I've cleaned it and set it up but not much else. Being black on black with black bits it doesn't show the dings. It's the kind of axe you can use to demolish a piano.

I saw way more white Precisions (a la Dee Dee) than anything else on the NYC punk scene c. 1979.

Whatever bass Dee Dee was holding at any given time.

Believe it or not, it does still work. I'm sorry for the bad quality of photos

This is punk. If it still works it doesn't need fixing!

What you paid for your instrument?

That isn't punk!

I steal all my instruments from buskers or from bands that do classic rock covers, that is punk!

Absolutely. Steve Jones stole his Les Paul from the Spiders from Mars.

I was told it was the Fender Twins they got from the Spiders and the Les Paul (white Custom) came from Sylvain Sylvain via Malcolm Mclaren. Though Steve Jones admits to having a ton of guitars and "lifting" virtually all of them around that time. I read and interview once where he said he didn't really know much about guitars and basically just wanted what he saw other bands playing.

Regardless... that's kinda awesome. He's why I have a white LP Custom.

I've heard interviews with him and he has a ton of respect and a ton of love for bands that you really wouldn't imagine him being into. His old radio show was fantastic.

Yeah, I think it's probably more awesome that both Steve Jones and Sylvain Sylvain both used the same guitar. Probably makes it the most punk guitar ever! In the end his manager stole the guitar from him.

A lot of the early punks are musically underrated and had pretty decent musical taste.

I'd say Krist Novoselic's old Ibanez Black eagle qualifies.

Or Flea's punk modulus bass.
