Buffalo Springfield Bassists

I've been listening to my Buffalo Springfield boots lately and was wondering what gear Bruce Palmer used live. I'm guessing a P-Bass and big Fender amps. On YouTube I've seen Jim Felder with a Hofner and later pictures of Jim Mesina with a P-Bass and Sunn amps. Any one know what was actually used?

Can't tell you...

But I'm curious if a recording that a friend of mine made circulates....

Whittier High School, not sure of the date....
Stills, Young, Furey, Messina, and Martin.

Great stereo audience recording, but the vocals are low because the tape recorder was on the stage, and missing the PA columns...

Neil Young: "Turn the lights on." (Lights go on). "OK, they're all ugly".

Clancy, Childs Claim to Fame, Mr. Soul, Bluebird, and Good Time Boy, not in that order. "On the Way Home" not recorded.

I'm about to do a remix on the master, and can get you a copy down the line sometime...

Messina was on a Fender bass that night. Fender Showmans, I think. But not sure....

I have that boot. I wonder about the date and lineup, as they were talking about "Rock'n'Roll Woman" like it was a new song that they were working on in the studio. All of those songs are from the first two albums as well. It just FEELS like it was earlier than January, 1968...

OK, that is not Whittier High School...

Trust me, I was there...

It's been miss-ID'd for years....

Here's the correct setlist for the recording I have:

Rock And Roll Woman (not recorded)
On The Way Home
Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing
Good Time Boy
Mr. Soul
Bluebird

As a longtime Buffalo Springfield fan, I'd love to hear the Whittier tape when you're done with it!

I'll let you know on this thread when it's done...

Just a killer "Mr. Soul" with two screamin' Neil solos....

I want one! I want one!
I'd love to hear it.
I have the boot Tim mentioned if it's the one where they talk about being grubby because they'd been in the studio and studios are grubby places.

Palmer was using a P-Bass when I saw them live in LA a couple of times in the '60s. And Fender piggy-back amps with big bottoms, likely 2x15s. It was a very long time ago.

As I mentioned in another thread, I have a couple of Springfield shows (including the very last one "The Buffalo Springfield will not perform!" etc.).

And though, admittedly, the sound quality is not very good at all, the performances are “mixed.” They sounded much better in the studio.

PS: In a completely other thread, I asked if anyone knew if the William “Charlie” Chin from Cat Mother And The All-Night Newsboys was the same Chin who played banjo on Again. Anyone?

Looks like it was the same guy:

Apparently there was a connection through Cat Mother bassist Roy "Bones' Michaels, who had been in the Cafe Au Go Go Singers with Stills and Furay...

Oh, thanks Tim!!!

I wasn't aware of the 'Au Go Go Singers' connection. That makes sense now.

Stills does a mean version of "High Flyin' Bird" on that 'Singers' CD btw.

Cat Mother was a rockin' little band. I saw 'em a few times around the bay area in the late '60's.

I actually saw Cat Mother in a little bar in Durham, NC, in about 1991 or so. I have no idea why they were there, apparently it was a reunion (perhaps one of them was a prof at Duke?). I had never even heard of them, but a buddy of mine who was a little older and spent a lot of time seeing bands in the late 60s/early 70s in New England dragged me to the show. I liked them!
