I haz a bass!
So I was returning the '66 Champ I had fixed to a friend, and we got down to jamming for a while. I broke down and bought the 1990 '51 P-Bass he had offered before.
Here 'tis... he threw in the case! ![]() ![]() ![]() (As you can see, it's been gigged and knocked around a couple times!) My first order of business after getting it home was to attach the vintage-style black leather strap I had bought for my Rickenbacker (which it didn't fit). Second order of business was to straighten the neck out a little. Lastly, I ordered a set of '51 P-Bass cover plates from Angela. I'd been wanting one of these basses for a while because I love the simplicity, but hadn't pulled the trigger until now. It plays great, and oddly enough, I really enjoy the sound through my 5F2A... - Scott |

That's the one I wanted, but they became too pricey for me prior to the reintroduction of the "schoolbus yellow" ones.
I believe these are Fugijen Gakki (the long-time FJ builder that went out of the guitar business in the '90s) built and, as you can see, have some differences from the recent ones supposedly built by Dyna -- not the least of which being a more realistic color.

very very nice. If it were mine, I'd get original style knobs. Otherwise very attractive.
My local store, a small one, now has a LPB VM Squier in stock. Luckily I had the strength to walk on by, but not before checking out the weight and details of it. High gloss finish on the neck, same thing on the Squier model with the big humbucker. Back to the subject. If I were to buy I'd get what's shown in the pictures above. Nice colour compared to the traditional butterscotch. |

Yup, I forgot to mention that I'm on the lookout for some knurled dome knobs, too.
Thanks for the kind words, folks! I'm really digging the feel of this thing, even though I used to think the necks were too thin. - Scott |

Yes, GC is phasing-them-out at $399. I took advantage of both this, and the Blizzard Pearl American Jazz at $599.
These are more versatile than I expected. It can be as Jazz-y as a Jazz with the right strings, or very traditional with GHS flatwounds. If you don't like the hum, you can get a Fralin split coil pickup, and still come-out ahead at the $399 price!
