Bass Buying Dilemma

Hey everyone!

My current bass guitar has recently crapped out on me, and am looking at replacing it. Because my budget is about $400, I am currently considering a Squier Jazz Bass like one of these:

Modified 70s - http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend....ass?sku=519639

CV - http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend....ar-?sku=519578

Standard - http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend....ass?sku=512733

I play in an Alt Rock band and am wondering if anyone has any other suggestions?

I see used MIM J and P Basses for that price fairly frequently. Just saying...

Yeah, I don't like to buy from the Internet, and my local guitar shop sells their guitars for those prices (their used selection is non-existent).

Although if I ever did see a MIM J for that price range I would jump at the opportunity to get it :)

I would watch the GFS at Talkbass. They have a decent feed back system so you can get a sense of who you'e buying from... I've had a large number of smooth and easy transactions for basses there.

Std J's flip on TB pretty often. You might luck into a used G&L Tribute JB-2 in that range. That's a smokin' J clone.

If I had to buy new, based on recent experience If I were looking to the low end, I'd be looking at Cort and Samick before I'd be looking at Fender. I did extensive work (modifications) to a Samick Royale last year and that is a really well built instrument

Also, with the new models coming out, some Fender dealers are blowing out their older stock of MIM's at good prices...just keep your eyes peeled.

Hey everyone, I tried out the Squier VM J bass, and have fallen in love with it... plans are to pick it up tomorrow, but I thank everyone for the suggestions!

And yes 4mal, Saint John is not a hot bed of used basses, I looked all over the city today and saw 4, that's right, 4 used bass guitars

Will be posting pics when I get it.

JPark: if you want someone local to talk about bass gear etc, check out the GuitarsCanada forum and look for user "Michelle". She's a lefty bass player and knows what stores to avoid and where to get good prices in an otherwise bleak market in the Maritimes.
